Product Description

Review

Loaded with potent charges, insidious and cumulative in their effects. In Gaffney’s fiction thoughts take physical form, and the material world has a surreal vitality … The stories are sometimes haunting, and sometimes comic. The Half-life is an appropriate metaphor for the lingering effect they have on the reader. (Nicholas Clee TLS )

I've been a fan of David Gaffney ever since I bought a copy of "Sawn-Off Tales" after hearing him read from it, and this book is probably his best yet. Gaffney's genius is in spotting the bizarre amid the mundane and identifying the peculiar unspoken rules that we transgress at our peril, such as the crucial importance of being on the right side of the Emmylou Harris debate. Reading one of his stories is like looking at a Martin Parr photograph. All human life is here. Essential reading.

deep and funny 25 Nov 2010

I love david gaffneys stories. I first came across him with sawn off tales. I wasn't mad on his novel, never never, but really short stories are where he excels. They are very funny and also very deep and you can reread them and get more out of them each time. If you like people like Dan Rhodes or even raymond carver you'll love these

David Gaffney is a wonderful story teller. In just a few words he can conjure a world, populate it with individual characters, and run out a full plot to entertain you.

I first came across him with Sawn Off Tales and then Aromabingo, both of which were wonderful. This third volume continues the promise of those earlier outings with tale after tale to carry you away.

If you like books, stories, reading, or even just words, you need this book.
