Product Description

Pop punk: "because there is no fourth chord". It’s an ethos that’s served their forefathers well and Sum 41’s 2000 debut Half Hour of Power, sticks firmly to this frantic fretboard formula.

Their hugely successful All Killer No Filler album was recorded only two months after this--to say that they are cut from the same cloth is an understatement, but not necessarily a bad thing. What they lack in the assured canniness that Blink 182 occasionally produce (dirty jokes aside of course) they make up for with catchy riffs and a fine line in pre-pubescent white-boy rap--so much so that you’d think The Offspring aimed "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)" at them.

"Makes No Difference" is as close to the brilliance of "Fat Lip" as it gets here, but the breezy "Summer" keeps the adrenaline pumping where the tunes falls short (and a catchy hookline is essential for songs like these to succeed).

Their delinquency is reminiscent of Ash’s 1977 (with similar photo album booklets), but where Tim Wheeler wrote "Girl From Mars", "Bizzy" has written "Dave’s Possessed Hair" with the lyrics "You say you’re a pacifist/Instead you wave your fist." Close, but no Harry Winterman cigar. Quintessential casualties of middle-brow, white-collar, suburban society, this is 30 minutes of power but only 15 minutes of tunes.

Good enough for what it achieved but it’s hard to see if they have the ability (or desire) to evolve and graduate from this tiresome genre and write classics like Green Day did.

Still, they seem to be having the time of their lives while they can and that, apparently, is all that matters.--Ben Johncock

5.0 out of 5 stars Boss 20 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I bought this CD after buying All Killer, No Filler. Half Hour of Power is just as good as All Killer, and is a great CD for any Sum 41 fan. It has more of a punk edge to it than All Killer, The Best songs are, Makes No Difference, and Dave's Possessed Hair/What we Believe, which includes the great rap section that was on the Fat Lip Video! I recommend this CD to anyone who are fans of Sum 41, or want to hear modern punk rock at its best!

4.0 out of 5 stars The title says it all 2 Nov 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
It really is half hour of power with each track as energising as the last. A bit miffed at the fact two of the tracks are on all killer no filler (bought all killer no filler before) but the GREAT guitar riffs make up for it. I can't get enough of this album especially Dave's possesed hair/It's what we're all about, if you liked the single of It's what we're all about then you'll like this track even better as it has more energy behind. This Sum 41 debut album will certainly knock your socks off!

3.0 out of 5 stars I feel somewhat cheated! 12 Jun 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I bought 'all killer..' before this one and felt somewhat cheated by this purchase. Firstly because the album really is only 30 minutes long and secondly because two of the tracks are already on the UK version of 'all killer, no filler'. Never the less it is still a top album with Sum 41's punk rock sound intact, and for the cheap price it may still be worth a look!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are a Sum 41 fan, you must buy this 25 Nov 2001
Format:Audio CD
Whether a new Sum 41 fan, or you already have their other album- All Killer; No Filler, this is a must, as you can see where they get their inspiration from for their other album, by hearing Half Hour Of Power.
There is a lot of great, catchy guitar riffs that you will want to hear over and over again.
The best songs on the album are 'Makes No Difference' and 'Second Chance For Max Headroom', the latter with help from Less Than Jake and you will see why!
Also 'Daves Possessed Hair/It's What We're All About' is a double song, the first being their excellent pop-punk, and the second a punk-rap, if you can think what that is.
Whether a new fan or not, this album is truly brilliant, with some quality songs on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Killer debut 16 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
Another reviewer complained that this is only 30 minutes long, but what do you expect? This does exactly as it says on the tin: it's half an hour of fast, energetic punk rock power. It's a shame they have become a little more "mellow" in recent times, but one thing you can't take away from them is that this is one of the best debut albums by a modern punk band.
