Grit, elemental rhythm, tight-as-a-drumhead playing, and a profound depth of feeling:
these are the promises of a great soul band. And St. Paul and the Broken Bones deliver
on those promises.
Half the City is the compelling full-length Single Lock/Thirty Tigers debut of the
Birmingham, Alabama-based sextet, who have already created a maelstrom of interest
with their roof-raising ... Read more in Amazon's St. Paul & The Broken Bones Store

Product Description

St. Paul & The Broken Bones have already garnered much attention due to their high-energy live performances, led by charismatic front man Paul Janeway. The groups sweat-soaked, take-no prisoners style has converted many, including Paste Magazine, who named St. Paul & The Broken Bones one of their 2013 Best Of Whats Next artists, and NPR Music, who included the album in their Under The Radar Albums Preview. Half The City oozes with key elements of Memphis soul, Muscle Shoals R&B and the Motown experience, which lay solid ground for Jane- ways expressive vocals. "Within ten seconds of hearing Paul Janeways voice - secondhand on a friends cellphone - I was in. The first five was spent in disbelief. I can count on one hand the times thats happened. I admit it took a bit to hear past him. The beautiful thing was that the band was and is every bit as good. The same swagger, conviction, and - dare I say - soul. Thats saying something. What sealed the deal was the songwriting, the arrangements, the dynamics - all the things that comes with having been a unit for many more years than they have. And then I experienced them live. - John Paul White .

They say if you wait long enough for a bus then two will come along. This maxim now appears to apply to American Soul Bands. The emergence last year of the Alabama Shakes and their mighty lead singer vocalist Brittany Howard, a veritable force of nature, brought real cheer to those who like their music soulfully stirred and infused with Muscle Shoals devout passion. The owners of Single Lock Records sit in this tradition including John Paul White of the now defunct Civil Wars and Ben Tanner of said Alabama Shakes. In signing St Paul & The Broken Bones it must have felt that Christmas came early. The band hail from Alabama and its six members come fully formed and schooled in the best traditions of the music of Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, O V Wright and Al Green. The band however are not mere revivalists. Like the Shakes they are regenerators breathing new life into a timeless tradition that should regularly bang down the doors and demand substantial quality time on the stereo. The lead singer of the band is another surprise package. Indeed Paul Janeway might do for soul what Paul Potts did for opera. He is an unlikely frontman, looking like a mix of Huey Long and Bill Gates yet singing like his black soul heroes with a voice which he should insure for millions. He is a star in the making and once you have heard that voice you are going to return time after time. "Half the City" is the bands debut and in terms of consistency it tops "Boy and Girls" by the Alabama Shakes in terms of sheer joy de vivre and deep down desire.

Play this album to any musical acquaintance and the first astonished words uttered will be "Who the f*** are they"? Check out Janeway's vocal on "Like a Mighty River" with its superb horn backdrop and powerhouse chords and try not to be impressed.

Please guys lets keep this in proportion, wheres this has a very good feel to it its not what I would call a must have bit of noise, I like the bands tight music & the lead has a good feel for Soul music, however there it ends!! if you are happy to buy this then thats fine but there a heck of a lot of better Soul acts out there, St Paul remind me of a bad tribute Band for Otis Redding, listed to "Down in the Valley" then listed to Soloman King or even better Otis Redding, primarily the lead singer tries to sound like Otis Well he does not!! he can't worry a line ,the delivery is not there, the pure Quality of Otis Reddings voice is just not in the same street, I don't think that this good band will ever starve but please lets have a little " Respect" if you put yourself forward in trying to ape a Great Artist then expect some flack, this also goes for all the Elvis,Sinatra & all the other sound alike guys, I know that I will get a lot of stick for my opinion but thats exactly what they are my opinion ,

St Paul has a voice which resembles a mixture of Sam Moore, Otis Redding, and Bill Withers. Not bad at all. The Broken Bones draw their influences from a massive, tasty, spectrum of soul/RnB influences. the result is a mighty fine album that sounds like it could have been part of the original Atlantic Records 'Stax' catalogue . The album only lasts just over 39 minutes but is worth the dosh to anyone who loves that retro soul sound like me. I am so happy that I stumbled across this album. A brilliant treat for my lug 'oles. Why such a yucky, detracting, bit of album art though ?

I bought the CD before going to see the band "live" at Gorilla in Manchester. It whetted my appetite for what turned out to be a brilliant gig.

Purchased this album on vinyl and what a great album it is. Not the usual sort of thing I would listen to so was very surprised that I liked it so much when I first heard it on Spotify so had to buy it. Well worth listening to.
