Product Description

About the Author

HT Cockburn was born in Wallsend on Tyne but believes this to have been an accident and would have preferred to be an Arizonan cowboy in the 1850s. He has tried to make the best of this mistake however, and has learned to write on a computer, drive a car and live in East Sussex. He has travelled the world writing and directing video programmes, and likes turning his guitar up to 11. The Halcyon Way is his first published novel and he has also produced a CD of poetry-with-music, Ship Without Rudder, and exhibited his illustrated poems.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Comedy of Errors Hollywood Style, 30 Oct 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Halcyon Way (Paperback)
Loved this book - a book of opposites. Set on a Greek island, you seem to soak up the sun and the light and the ancient terrain - but also the raucous, boozy, greasy atmosphere of those horrendous holiday resorts - all beer and 'Inglis fish an Chip sold here.' Yeah, lotsa contrasts, day /night; sea /sky; hot /cold; fast and slow, sex and sudden violence. Very atmospheric, very pacey, it made me laugh a lot; but there are some poignant moments, too. On the one hand, it's a comedy of errors in the fullest Shakesperian sense, on the other, a very Greek tragedy, albeit somewhat cinematic and Hollywood blockbuster style (complete with final showdown gun battle - fantastic!). Yet there's an underlying spiritual journey, too and a lot of basic humanity - coming to terms with oneself (even redemption) through philosophising about fate and destiny; how our weaknesses can get us in the end if we don't watch it - our Achilles heel? - how big fish eat little fish and even are we the playthings of the Gods? All very apposite in this Greek setting.
It's a good yarn too, told in a quirky, street-wise style that zips along. I couldn't put this book down and I do hope Cockburn writes a sequel...
