Product Description

Book Description

Accompanying the major four-part BBC1 TV series to be screened in Spring 2010, this is the story of one family's year living by a West Country river. Written by award-winning wildlife writers and photographers Charlie Hamilton-James and Philippa Forrester.

Product Description

A mayfly dances above honey-gold water in the evening sunshine; a kingfisher plunges into the sparkling depths to emerge with a struggling minnow in its orange beak; an otter slips silently through reeds; a family of moorhens paddles to its night-time lodgings. Here is the perfect, idyllic scene of a British river in summertime captured with love and astonishing skill by two of the leading wildlife filmmakers of our age.

Halcyon River Diaries was commissioned following the phenomenally successful and award-winning My Halcyon River an intimate portrait of a secret world along a river in Britain, where otters hunt on the midnight current, mink lie in wait to ambush unwary victims and gleaming kingfishers pierce the water to spear their prey. Deemed as one of the most beautiful films at the Wildscreen festival, 2004, My Halcyon River was the winner of the Kodak Cinematography Award.

Halcyon River Diaries is an evocative look at the wildlife of a typical English river, through the eyes of Philippa and Charlie's family, including their three young sons Fred, Gus and Arthur, who live beside it. Over the period of a year we experience life on the river following the same group of animal characters as they navigate the seasons, as well as seeing how Philippa and Charlie's passion for the river extends into every part of their family life.

Beautiful book 11 Aug 2010
I bought this for my mothers birthday present as she liked the TV show. Was delighted when the book arrived - it was beautiful!! am slightly jealous of their idylic lifestyle though!! Gorgeous photos and - a nice surprise - some lovely recipes included. If you liked the TV show please buy this book, i am going to get a copy for myself too!

Great Book 14 May 2010
Standing mid stream with a fly rod in my hand I suddenly sensed that I was being watched - turning slowly I found that an otter was close by. It swam by sniffing along my floating line before climbing the bank and disappearing. Twenty minutes later as it was getting quite dark the otter returned to fish the same pool that I had been fishing. I would dearly have dearly loved to have had my camera - I've returned a few times since but without any success.
A few days later I came across this book which seems to be promoted on the back of Philippa Forrester's TV fame and her enviable lifestyle by the river - however the books real strength is her husband's excellent advice on photographing wildlife (including otters). I found his guidance very informative. He freely divulges the hints and tips he has gained over many years watching wildlife. The photographs included in the book are stunning. This is an excellent book which combines some `Sunday supplement' type motivation to encourage readers to get out there and engage with nature with the clear practical advice needed to make cold, motionless nights spent by a river bank worthwhile.
