Book Description

5 Aug 2004 Hairy Maclary and Friends

Hairy Maclary and Zachary Quack is a hilarious rhyming story by Lynley Dodd.

A board book editon of this bestelling Hairy Maclary story. Hairy Maclary is looking for some peace and quiet for his afternoon doze. But everywhere he goes he's followed by an irrepressible yellow duckling, Zachary Quack, who wants to footle and frolic and play. Hairy Maclary keeps trying to skedaddle away only to be followed by the pittery pattery duck! Eventually Hairy Maclary realises that he can't shake off Zachary Quack and they curl up together for a doze in the sun!

Lynley Dodd is an award-winning author/illustrator who lives in New Zealand. She is enormously popular for her rhyming stories of the unforgettable HAIRY MACLARY and his friends. She worked as a teacher before beginning to write her own books in 1974.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding picture book for small children 25 Mar 2005
By ELH Browning TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Board book
My children and I are big Hairy Maclary fans, and I love most of the stories. This one is a particular favourite as it is so wonderfully evocative of a lazy summery afternoon. Hairy Maclary just wants to doze in the warm sun but a rather perky little duckling, Zachary Quack, follows him persistently because he wants him to play. This makes me smile as it reminds

me all too much of a younger child following an older one (or following a parent desperate for five minutes peace and quiet). Then Zachary Quack turns out to be a true friend when Hairy Maclary gets himself stuck in the river and the ending is a happy warm surprise. As with the majority of Lynley Dodds' stories, the language she uses is wonderful: pittery pattery, footle and frolic, skeddadles etc. There's lots of strikingly unusual vocabulary which makes me smile, my children enjoy it and pick up and use in no time, and it is used with great flair in her rhythmical rhyming text. Outstanding.

Ms Dodd has an excellent command of ryhming and repition that is a big hit with children. At the tender age of 16months my daughter is already a big fan.

Buy this book - if not for your child it would make an excellent present.

This book is excellent, it has an easy to follow story with Hairy Maclairy up to his usual tricks.

My two grandsons aged five and just starting to read on their own found it easy to follow the words and were soon joining in the story.

I enjoyed reading it to them and I'm sure it will become one of their favourites in no time.
