3 Jun 2010 Hairy Maclary and Friends

Hairy Maclary' and Zachary Quack is a hilarious rhyming story by Lynley Dodd.

Zachary Quack, a small and determined duckling, sets out to play with a rather reluctant Hairy Maclary. A 'cat and mouse' chase follows, with the two characters ending up peacefully snuggled together after Zachary Quack has saved a soggy Hairy Maclary from the river.

Lynley Dodd is an award-winning author/illustrator who lives in New Zealand. She is enormously popular for her rhyming stories of the unforgettable HAIRY MACLARY and his friends. She worked as a teacher before beginning to write her own books in 1974.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding picture book for small children 25 Mar 2005
By ELH Browning VINE VOICE
Format:Board book
My children and I are big Hairy Maclary fans, and I love most of the stories. This one is a particular favourite as it is so wonderfully evocative of a lazy summery afternoon. Hairy Maclary just wants to doze in the warm sun but a rather perky little duckling, Zachary Quack, follows him persistently because he wants him to play. This makes me smile as it reminds

me all too much of a younger child following an older one (or following a parent desperate for five minutes peace and quiet). Then Zachary Quack turns out to be a true friend when Hairy Maclary gets himself stuck in the river and the ending is a happy warm surprise. As with the majority of Lynley Dodds' stories, the language she uses is wonderful: pittery pattery, footle and frolic, skeddadles etc. There's lots of strikingly unusual vocabulary which makes me smile, my children enjoy it and pick up and use in no time, and it is used with great flair in her rhythmical rhyming text. Outstanding.

Ms Dodd has an excellent command of ryhming and repition that is a big hit with children. At the tender age of 16months my daughter is already a big fan.
Buy this book - if not for your child it would make an excellent present.

This book is excellent, it has an easy to follow story with Hairy Maclairy up to his usual tricks.
My two grandsons aged five and just starting to read on their own found it easy to follow the words and were soon joining in the story.
I enjoyed reading it to them and I'm sure it will become one of their favourites in no time.

5.0 out of 5 stars The dog and duck 26 Aug 2008
By Seren Ade HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
The dog and duck concept might sound like a pub name, but this simple yet very well-written and beautifully rhythmic narrative featuring a Scottie dog and a duckling is a big favourite with 2-5 year olds.

Lynley Dodd's books are generally popular with the preschool class I teach: whether Scarface Claw, Slinki Malinki, or the perennial favourite Hairy Maclary... the stories are much-loved and much-requested. But this is the hands-down, runaway favourite.

The story is - for a Lynley Dodd - on the easy side. Children love the rhyme scheme accompanying Hairy Maclary's elements of the narrative and particularly enjoy the routine loud/simple interruptions to the rhyme provided by Zachary Quack's entrances into the narrative.

There is a simple tension between the protagonists before an endangered Hairy Maclary is saved from a serious problem (being unable to get out of the river he'd jumped into) by Zachary Quack's superior water skills - and the two live happily, if sleepily cuddled-up together, after!

This is our family's favourite children's book of all. 2 girls now age 3 and 5 have been enjoying it for the last couple of years and I must have read it hundreds of times and still don't get tired of it - the sign of a great book I think!

I wish Lynley Dodd would write a book a week my 3 year old and I would never tire of them.
The rhyming text leaves lots of opportunities for her to join in and teaches her lots of new fun words!!!
The whole family loves them!

5.0 out of 5 stars A quackingly good little story. 7 July 2014
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
A brilliant little rhyming story, which is ideal for both tiny children to enjoy and also great for those who are starting to read. The pictures are lovely too. Mildly comic and a pleasure to read. I much prefer this to the other Hairy MacLary we have (HM at Donaldson's Dairy.) Highly recommended.
