Ten adventures with Hairy Maclary and friends, based on the children's books of Lynley Dodd. 'Hairy Maclary From Donaldson's Diary' finds Hairy discovering a nasty surprise when on a walk with his friends, while 'Hairy Maclary's Bone' tells of his struggle to keep a new juicy bone from his hungry friends. 'Hairy Maclary Scattercat' describes Hairy's adventure when he gets more than he bargained for chasing a cat and 'Schnitzel von Krumm's Basketwork' tells of Schnitzel's disappointment when his family decide to replace his old dog basket. 'Slinky Malinki' follows Slinky the cat and discovers what he gets up to at night, while 'Hairy Maclary's Rumpus at the Vet' shows what happens when a cockatoo decides to liven things up. Hairy finds out what happens to a tough cat that is stuck up a tree in 'Hairy Maclary's Caterwaul Caper' and in 'Hairy Maclary's Showbusiness' Hairy experiences his first cat show. In 'Slinky Malinki, Open the Door' Slinky gets a shock when he opens one door too many and, finally, in 'Schnitzel von Krumm Forget-Me-Not' Schnitzel feels lonely when his family go on holiday without him.
My boys are huge fans of the books, and seeing them brought to life on the television was excellent for them. Nice short stories, exactly the same as the books, so its not a DVD you need to run from beginnning to end if you don't want to. Nice, gentle, amusing stories.
My son love Lynley Dodds' books and now loves this DVD. He sits happily with the books in front of him and the DVD playing (unless he has to hide from Scarface Claw!). And I can watch it with him as I love it too. It's a charming DVD. Worth every penny.
A delight for children and grown ups alike, the wonderfully colourful and entertaining Hairy Maclary and friends has you itching to find out more about them. Great stories that you soon learn off by heart, and which the children love to join in saying as they watch, but still want to see again and again. Brilliant, lovable characters that children relate to well, and great antics that the characters get up to. My children love lynley Dodds characters whether they are on video or in books and they are a great favourite at school.
I don't often write reviews but this dvd is brilliant, especially if your child loves dogs! My 2 year old is a big fan of the books so this dvd has been a hit. Wonderful poetry, magnificent animation that captures all the mannerisms of dogs and short episodes. I also love it, my favourite is Schnitzel Von Krumm, so cute when he wants his old smelly basket instead of his new one! My daughter also joins in with the rhymes and has been for teaching her adjectives. Overall a really good buy and a refreshing change from the usual kids dvds. I just wish you could buy a collection of these stories on audio cd instead of seperately.
How did we ever manage without the hilarious Hairy McClary? He is quite the most favourite of all our books and videos for our grandchildren - witty, always in scrapes and with an amazing array of friends. This video of 10 of his stories is great, but a few minor complaints ... Scar-face Claw is a bit more scary in the videos than necessary, and why oh why no version of Hairy McClary and Zackery Quack - quite the best HMc story of all time. Still our 2, 3, 4 and 5 year olds love being endlessly amused by these stories.
My son loves this to death. He's not allowed to watch much tv, as he's only 2 and a half, but he'll sit quitely for as long as I let him and watch this. Great in the car too. Exactly like the books, well read with good emphasis on Dodd's extensive vocabulary of odd words, and the animation, which some have complained about here is brilliantly tied in to the illustrations of the book to be as close as possible to reading the thing when you are otherwise occupied. Definitely recommend it!
We have the two storybooks with 10 stories altogether and 8 of them are on this DVD plus there are two stories with Slinky Malinki. The characters and stories are true to the books, the music is catchy. All in all a great treat for my son
My granddaughters love the Hairy McClary stories & were delighted to receive the DVD as a present. The illustrations are true to the books, & the DVD is a great introduction for younger children to these excellent stories. We hadn't realised before viewing the DVD that Hairy McClary is from New Zealand. Now we appreciate the phrase "Donaldson's Dairy" as corner shops are referred to as Dairies in NZ.
