Book Description

31 Mar 2011 Wargaming
This book describes the Hail Caesar game and its various rules and procedures as played by its creators and their friends. The authors aim is to enable and encourage the reader to relive the deeds of warriors and conquerors of an age long past with armies of model soldiers upon the tabletop. Our game provides rules for all the fundamentals of warfare such as the direction of troops, manoeuvre on the battlefield, the effects of missile fire, the role of morale, and close quarter combat. Detailed rules cover the differences in methods of fighting from the age of the chariot to medieval times, as well as the development of weapons and tactics pertinent to each era. In addition, the book includes seven complete examples of Hail Caesar battles embracing a range of conflicts from the wars of the Pharaohs to the Crusades, some based on real battles and other encounters created by the authors, such as; The Battle of Kadesh 1274BC, where Rameses of Egypt confronts the Hittites in the greatest ever clash of chariots; the Battle of Brunanburgh 937AD, where Norse invaders are met by the Anglo-Saxon King Athelstan in the bloodiest battle of the Viking age; or The Battle of Barada River 1148AD , which sees King Baldwin of Jerusalem strike for the city of Damascus during the Second Crusade. About the Author Rick Priestley is a world-renowned games designer having created Games Workshop's Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 game systems amongst others. Following on from his highly acclaimed Horse & Musket rules, Black Powder, he has now turned his attention to the ancient world with Hail Caesar, which spans from 3000BC through to around 1100AD.

5.0 out of 5 stars The 'game' is back in wargaming! 22 Jun 2011
Format:Hardcover
Hail Caesar is a remarkable set of wargaming rules covering the Ancient to medieval periods.
Total quality seeps from the pages. Even if you do not wargame or if you don't dabble in the periods covered you'll feel you want to after flicking through this inspiring book. Lavishly illustrated throughout, the presentation is superb.

As to the rules, I've used many sets of ancient rulesets over the years including WRG in at least 3 editions and I must confess these rules are like a breath of fresh air. They are simple in every way but with a subtlety and brilliance that is expected from more detailed sets. Don't get me wrong, detailed sets will always maintain its place in wargaming, but for those who wish to have a less frantic break from the norm give these a try!
Rick Priestley's mantra is if you don't like a particular rule, change it. The rules themselves are very laid back in presentation even allowing some nice bits of humour! Flexibility is also a part of these rules. Ground scale, basing etc.

If you are an out and out tournament player then you may wish to walk away from these rules. They are designed for friendly gatherings of like minded people who have the 'who cares who wins' attitude and just enjoy the game for the games sake.

Just one small criticism regarding some spelling errors. (can only assume proof readers guide dog was unavailable that day!!) Certainly not significant enough to detract from the rules themselves and I have still stuck with my five star rating.

All I can say is Rick has put the 'game' back into wargaming - 'Hail Caesar' to that!! You've got a winner, mate!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rules for a friendly game 30 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
These are an interesting set of rules applying a distinctive approach to Ancient Wargaming for the first time. If you like competitions and points based competitive games then these are not the rules for you. If however you like relaxed games between friends where the emphasis is on historical recreation and creating historical rather than finely balanced scenarios then these rules are worth exploring as they give a style of game that I have not found elsewhere. They also give the ability to easily create troop types to portray any periods and units you wish and to try out alternative interpretations of troop types. I also like the idea of wearing down morale and cohesion rather than simply taking casualties; and being able to reflect training and morale rather than just type of armour in a unit's resilience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sign of the Master 24 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover
Hail Caesar is a superb set of ancient wargaming rules. It is intended for mature wargamers who like scenario based games for pleasurable play. The book is wonderfully unpompous, not taking itself too seriously. A well designed, eassy to learn fun system that has a feel for ancient warfare and gives surprisingly realistic results.

The physical production and artwork is excellent.

I have bought new armies, my interest rekindled in the period. This guys is how you do it. But then, Rick Priestly knows a thing or two about writing wargame rules.
