This final installment contains episodes 11 - 13 of this angelic series. Where the first ten episodes raised lots of questions, the last three episodes offered some answers - but still left a lot to the imagination.
True to form, Haibane Renmei Volume 4 continues to focus on the characters - so instead of learning anything more about the strange conditions that Rakka has found herself in, we get to understand the history of a character who so far has been the most enigmatic, and has a mysterious past - Reki. The series has always had a dark edge to it, and that is more apparent in this finale.
The fact that there are so many unanswered questions should make for a pretty poor ending, but it doesn't. As I've already said, this series was always about the characters and therefore the conclusion offered ensured that the series ended satisfactorily.
In a nutshell: Haibane Renmei has defied the genre by existing as a series which offered nothing in the way of action, no big flying mecha, no super powers, no high-technologies - just a group of children who are dealing with life in a set of strange circumstances. If this had been a 26 part series rather than 13 parter then perhaps we could have learned more about how they came to be, and why they must live as they do. But the creators of the series did manage to cram more character development into these 13 episodes than some anime franchises achieve across several series. We need more series like this, but then again - with so much left unanswered, perhaps a follow up series will follow? I certainly hope so.
