All i can say about this anime is wow. That about sums it up.
Its done by the same creator as lain but had a slightly brighter artwork much of the time - but everything is all very subtle. Its really beautiful and absolutely magical, from the art to the way you care for the caracters.
The dialogue is often very simple and understanding or feelings can come more from the picture or reading inbetween the lines which makes it quietly compelling. I would recomend watching with Japanese language and Subtitles especially for later episodes - I find the dubbed voices very annoying and I dont feel that they quite capture the tones. However since the dubbing was American that could just be because I'm used to Englishness...
The story unfolds slowly and beautifully, but the first few episodes are mainly characterisation and scene-setting. This is neccessary however so if you find your attention wandering in the first few episodes then the next are still worth getting. The real complex plot properly comes in at about episode 6 or 7. I actually found a two disc set which included all thirteen episodes which was good because it didnt mean too much waiting inbetween episodes.
This anime is really thought provoking and not all of your questions are answered at the end. I found it amazing and i really hope you watch and enjoy it too. This is definately one of the best out there.
I just realised that i have said nothing about what it is about...
In a town surrounded by walls where no normal person leaves or enters is an abandoned dormitory builing named the Old Home. A group of Haibane live there - creatures who look human but have wings and halos. They also aren't born like humans either as you find out in the first episode. The anime tells the story of a girl, Rakka, who is a new Haibane and of the things she experiences through what happens to her and the others around her.
I could say much more about it but i really don't want to give away the story - other sites on the net have descriptions if you dont mind about that.
WATCH IT!!!!

Definitely the best Anime series that I've been fortunate enough to see - beautifully written, marvellous story, excellent characters. No guns or explosive action (which makes a nice change) but an inspired story that engages you and makes you think, and that's no bad thing.
I can't praise this enough.
Wonderful.

Haibane Renmei Vol 1, 22 April 2007
This review is from: Haibane Renmei - Vol. 1 [DVD] (DVD)
A astoundingly thought-provoking and beautiful little show that rewards the patient viewer. I've been around the anime block more than once, and if you'd told me within the first few episodes that I'd be comparing this tame little anime (that appeared to be mostly about young girls sitting around drinking tea and getting jobs in the local town) with the likes of Fullmetal Alchemist, Wolf's Rain and Rahxephon, I'd have told you you were crazy :)
But stick with it everybody! Something about Haibane gets its hooks into you and doesn't let you go; within the gentle atmosphere there is a tale of self-discovery, unselfish friendship and acceptance, both of yourself and the world around you that develops; it takes its time getting there but by the final episode I had tears running down my face and wasn't even sure entirely why. This is a classy, beautiful, gem of an anime-a diamond in the rough that will probably be dismissed by many simply because it doesn't LOOK like the classic that it IS. I love this anime-it left a smile on my face, a place in my heart and a space on my shelf for the prettily-presented boxed collection (which I was surprisingly willing to part with £30 for!)
This is something you'll never forget-go see it now! :)
