5.0 out of 5 stars Haibane Renmei 22 April 2007

A astoundingly thought-provoking and beautiful little show that rewards the patient viewer. I've been around the anime block more than once, and if you'd told me within the first few episodes that I'd be comparing this tame little anime (that appeared to be mostly about young girls sitting around drinking tea and getting jobs in the local town) with the likes of Fullmetal Alchemist, Wolf's Rain and Rahxephon, I'd have told you you were crazy :)

But something about Haibane gets its hooks into you and doesn't let you go; within the gentle atmosphere there is a tale of self-discovery, unselfish friendship and acceptance, both of yourself and the world around you that develops; it takes its time getting there but by the final episode I had tears running down my face and wasn't even sure entirely why. This is a classy, beautiful, gem of an anime-a diamond in the rough that will probably be dismissed by many simply because it doesn't LOOK like the classic that it IS. I love this anime-it left a smile on my face, a place in my heart and a space on my shelf for the prettily-presented boxed collection (which I was surprisingly willing to part with £30 for!)

This is something you'll never forget-go see it now! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Series 14 Dec 2007

What can I say about this series, except that it is perhaps one of the most emotional, thought-provoking and beautiful pieces of anime to come out of Japan in years!

Sure, the animation is a bit rough in places, and the foley work is sometimes mistimed, but none of that really matters when you have a wonderful story voiced by accomplished Japanese actors.

The quietly told journey of discovery, charting Rakka's new life as a Haibane in Old Home, will have you holding back tears by the end. Have a box of tissues handy!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best anime 1 Jun 2008

An amazing example of what anime is capable of.

Initially the greeting-card-angel-like appearance of the Haibane is rather distracting; whatever they are, they aren't angels. Stick with it.

This series is well up there with the famous Studio Ghibli features in its beauty and power. If you appreciate Spirited Away, you're likely to like this greatly too.

It moves slowly initially but is always interesting and ends with an extraordinarily moving climax.

It well deserves the five stars the other reviewers have given.
