The Hahnel Combi Wireless remote control and flash trigger is a dual purpose, four channel radio trigger dedicated for Nikon, though supporting other makes. It offers the basic functionality of either flash triggering or shutter release with auto-focus.

When I bought this item I could not discover from Hahnel's website or the Amazon description exactly what it did and didn't do, so I'm going to set it out here for anyone else who needs it.

The device has two purposes:

Purpose 1: Remote shutter release
Used in this way, you mount the receiver on the camera and connect it with the supplied connectors. There are three types supplied, which fit all current Nikons. If you half press the control it auto-focuses the camera. If you fully press it it takes a picture. If your camera is set to Bulb then you press it once to start the exposure and again, slightly longer, to finish it. If your camera is set to repeat exposure, you just hold it down. You can also switch it to four second delay, for which the transmitter and receiver both flash. Naturally, you could also set your camera to whatever delay you want and use it in that way as well. An illuminated button on the control tells you whether you've autofocused or are taking the shot.

There's also a setting for non-Nikon cameras, which uses more battery. Naturally, you'd also need the appropriate cable.

Purpose 2: Flash Triggering
You can also mount the trigger on the camera hotshoe and it will trigger the remote to fire a flash via a hot shoe, or via a studio light cable, which you have to buy as an extra, Hahnel Studio Light Cable for Combi TF Wireless Remote Control and Flash Trigger.

A 'Godsend' !

Total control over my Canon 7D from quite a distance. The wireless trigger works a full 360 degrees around the camera also, and this little unit is ideal for capturing birds / small mammals etc ! Set your camera up on a tripod, manually Prefocus on your 'feeder' on the bird table, go sit down in the summer house / shed etc with a Beer / or wine, and wait.

The only thing I've noticed is that if the small control is left 'loose' in your camera bag or pocket, the button is very easy to depress, thus depleting your battery quicker. I have cut down the 'blister pack' that both units came in and I keep them in there as it's very hard to press the button through the 'blister'.

Always a little suspicious of "3rd party" accessories, I was pleased to find it works straight out of the package exactly as advertised on my 50D. And having upgraded the camera, it works perfectly on a 7D as well! Much more convenient than using the self timer. The remote flash is useful when taking pictures from different positions, especially with kids who always seems to look anywhere but at you until the camera is put down! Just be aware that the flash has to be used on manual, TTL is not transmitted with this, but it's not a problem and the pictures I've taken don't seem to suffer from this. An excellent product well worth buying! Just one warning, DON'T put the remote transmitter in your accessory bag unless the push button is protected, otherwise you will find the little battery has gone flat! (This can happen if you put it in your pocket too!) Much cheaper than the Canon equivalents!

I have just got a panasonic GX1. Having read the intructions it says that the camera will only work with optional (and expensive) remote lead. Not true. This remote control system works fine with the GX1. It is simple to use and my only gripe is with the instructions which are frankly hopeless. But the product is easy to set up given a bit of thought!

ONE FINAL BIT OF ADVICE --> the lead that plugs the camera into the remote socket must be set the right way round (black end to camera and grey end to receiver) otherwise it will not work.

Hope this is of use.

There are many occasions when I want to be able to use the camera without having my eye against the viewfinder, usually shooting wildlife which seems to take exception to my presence or an another way of taking and being in a picture without the uncertainty of the self-timer.

This device was ideal and, as many reviewers have said, worked straight from the box without difficulty. It may be expensive for a facility not used too often but it is a lot cheaper than some others and it is very useful. With a little patience and planning, some stunning shots can be obtained.

Certainly worth a thought.

At last a good remote for my Panasonic G series, I have been used to being stuck with wired remote or having to pay a fortune for kit that weighs a ton, this is neither, it good value and does the job & my wife will be pleased as I can now be in the pictures.
One drawback, [hence 4 stars], if a separate flash is mounted on top of this unit on the camera, it has to be adjusted in manual mode as there is no direct connection to the camera electronics for auto adjustments.

This is just a fabulous bit of equipment to own. It's a remote control for use with the camera's Bulb (and other) functions. It's a Flash trigger with the capability of firing a standalone Speedlite NOT secured to the camera.
And after I spend another few quid on another cable I'll be able to fire my Bowens Studio Lights by simply pressing the shutter release button on my Canon 5D Mk II. HAPPY DAYS!
It came with 2 cables for different connector ports. It's simplicity itself. I can't recommend this highly enough. Sorry my review can't be longer but I have to go and play some more, with my new toy.
