Product Description

Review

"I have purchased three of your books: Paediatics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Haematology. I have found the story–telling style and the level of detail contained in the cases to be balanced nicely so that it retains a realism that other case books lack and that reader remains engaged in the outcome of the investigations and the end–point of the case. All in all, these series make for interesting and entertaining reads which ultimately renders them an excellent learning tool. – Medical Student,Trinity College Dublin

"This book is an example of how complex information can be presented attractively." – Journal of Tropical Pediatrics, 2009

"A useful book for the purpose of applying theory to practice in haematology diagnosis and problem solving and a good aid to revision." – The Royal College of Pathologists, July 2009

From the Back Cover

With over 20 real patient cases and outcomes, this latest title from the Clinical Cases Uncovered series is designed to help students and junior doctors learn how to recognise and understand significant diseases in haematology. Each case covers the history taking, examination, investigations and management of a particular disease, with question and answer sections to tie in the underlying basic and clinical science and help build further knowledge and understanding. At the end of each case there is a review to consolidate learning with a self–assessment section containing MCQs, EMQs and SAQs. Including colour blood films, haematology slides and patient photos throughout to reinforce learning, understanding and investigative skills, Haematology: Clinical Cases Uncovered helps prepare for life on the wards.

I'm a fan of CCUs and decided to read this because I knew nothing of haematology and wanted a general picture of the subject presented in a more applicable manner.

If you've not read anything about haematology, this is not a good book to start with. It's thinner than most other CCUs. The introductory chapter on medical sciences is the shortest I've seen of all the CCUs, except maybe the Neurology CCU. There are 23 brief cases on core conditions. It was very easy to read, very simply written with little to no jargon.

What I didn't like so much was the lack of completeness. After reading this, I went through the OHCM chapter on haaematology. That was a lot more comprehensive with a lot more pictures. I would recommend reading both together if you need something case based. The most disappointing this was that the treatments were often not mentioned in this book. So they wuld go through the whole case and when it came to management, there would be a very general statement saying the patient was treated with chemotherapy but they never mentioned the drugs.

Also, this CCU is written mostly in prose, with less summary boxes the other CCUs usually have. They did however, have an algorithm for each case which I didn't find so helpful because each was almost just like a summary of the case.

Lastly, the key point boxes at the end of each case sometimes had important facts which were not mentioned in the case which I thought was strange because I though the key points was more like a summary of what's most important in the case.

Being a Hematologist, I find this book is a good pedagogical tool for those who want to become familiar with heamatology (at least from the European point of view, where its not separated from pathology).
I usually recommend it to our first year residents, so that in two evernings they can take a taste of our speciality.
Clinical cases are shown as they come in everyday clinical practice, and explained step by step. This is an approach that will be very useful for medicine students, but also for residents beginning in the field. This can also be a handicap, because information is maybe a bit fragmented. Anyway, you cant have all. This should be known by those who buy it: it is meant for beginners, not for advanced residents or hematology consultants.
The only drawback I can actually find is that the book is thought best suited for the Anglo Irish practice, which cannot be translated exactly elsewhere.
Good for your money, if you know what to expect.

Cases, EMQs, MCQs and SAQs - all with solutions! - make this book invaluable in consolidating the dry haematology you see in normal text books by putting it into context.

The best bit is that it's a book FULL of well reviewed cases, rather than the token one or two cases with a brief explanation found in a 'normal' textbook. There isn't just one question and answer, and it walks you through the whole process, especially in forming and refining the differential diagnosis.

Unfortunately, this isn't a stand-alone text, as the 'science' is intergrated with the cases: if you just want to quickly read the facts (e.g. crash revise the types of anaemia and their causes before an exam) you have to pick them out of the body text.

It's a great book to learn from and understand the topic and then test yourself on it. It helps put lectures, patients and other basic science textbooks into perspective, but it would be difficult to use as a quick reference text.
