Product Description

Hadrian's Wall Path, 84 miles from end to end, follows the course of northern Europe's largest surviving Roman monument, a 2nd-century fortification built - in the border country between England and Scotland - on the orders of the Emperor Hadrian in AD122. Hadrian's Wall Path is the first National Trail to follow the course of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is proving an immensely popular walk and in the first 18 months of its opening in 2003 it attracted almost 400,000 walkers.

I would recommend taking with you this book, which has detailed descriptions, and gives the name and phone number of every place to eat, drink and stay along the way, and also the official National Trail guide (by Burton), which is particularly good for its OS maps. A perfect book would combine these features.

On the walk itself, the first day (through central Newcastle), and the last two days (through Carlisle and to the sea) - were not the best bits: no visible Wall at all, and only the occasional sign of its accompanying earthworks.

If you plan to do it, but don't want to do the whole lot, you'll probably want to do the best bit, and this, without any doubt, is the central section: lots of visible Wall and lots of scenic (and hilly!) countryside. Not many shops or pubs, though, so you'll need to stock up on food and water. You can do this bit in a long weekend.

So, for a three day trip: (1) Chollerford (best campsite ever, and various inns) to Twice Brewed, (2) Twice Brewed to Greenhead and (3) Greenhead to Walton.

However, its is very satisfying doing it from end to end, and I would recommend that - we did it in eight days, which is slow - one group we saw did it in four (which is fast).

I found it packed with detail, useful and easy to read when I walked Hadrian's Wall Trail. I run a B&B in the central section of the Trail, and among guests this guide is the most popular by 2:1. Sketch maps are similar to Wainwright's in style, level of clarity and detail and are easy to follow. Like any guide, it's best used in tandem with the OS maps. The publishers work to maintain it's accuracy in print and publish updates online - e.g. when pubs change opening times, or close completely as they have in Gilsland and Walton! - so I can point walkers to the website for any changes they might encounter. This is the guide most thumbed-through by guests who haven't a guidebook, or who've bought a different one - for the history and natural history as much as for the route detail and maps.

The suggested "Itineraries" are useful and I meet people who wished they'd taken note of the "Relaxed" option and hadn't tried to walk from Chollerford to Gilsland in 1 day (c.9hrs!), missing out time to enjoy all the "best" bits of the Trail, ending up on the AD122 bus - usefully timetabled in the book. A useful addition would be a summary grid of mileage between key points on the Trail.

I have to disagree with the previous review which said the sketches would annoy you. I can quite happily read a proper map but found no need to use one apart from identifying places seen more distant from the wall.

The maps are only sketches but give all the information you need to find you're way when the normally excellent signposting on the trail slips below its usual standard. As a bonus they also highlight any interesting features along or near the Wall.

The maps give rough timings between significant points on the route rather than distances, which is better as it takes into account the terrain you are covering rather than flat distance in miles, you soon get used to making minor adjustments for your own pace of walking.

I scanned all the maps from this book and expanded each onto A4 (easier on the eyes), put them into waterproof sleeves then carried these in a pocket to review when needed. I then left the book in the daypack unless I wanted some other information from it, or to preview the next days walk in the evening.

The only downside to the guide from my perspective was that it ran from East to West and I was walking the other way. On that note I found walking this way to be fine as the prevailing wind was from behind, making it less uncomfortable when the weather was more inclement. The walk into Newcastle while dull compared to the rest of the walk is more enjoyable than I expected for a city centre walk.
