I'll have to agree with several other reviewers that this book is an odd duck.
It touches lightly on dozens of subjects while only rarely providing any strong instruction for any of them.
As an example, I was delighted to see a section on "local storage". I've had trouble finding a good strong source of instruction on this very useful new feature for web applications. This book gives it three pages. There is a somewhat general introduction, followed by a page and a half of code, much of which isn't specific to local storage. There is no attempt whatsoever to provide a real foundation for the subject, or to define its capabilities other than with brief code samples which contain little to no explanation.
Time after time I was astounded by the inclusion of inline CSS. Anyone encouraging inline CSS rather than using a style sheet is steering you down the wrong road. And not only would there be inline CSS, but it would have browser specific tags! As the only example for the technique being discussed! Not good.
Another example is a little section on form validation. The majority of one page is taken up with the HTML for a simple form. I'll bet that most people wanting to learn something about form validation know what the HTML for a simple form looks like. When you are only providing 236 pages for all the material this book seeks to cover, wasting a page in this way means that it was intended to be filler. When a page is intended to be filler, the author is intending to sell you a book. He is not trying to make a good faith effort to instruct you.
Many code examples in the book seem to have been taken right out of a web site for the sake of convenience, with no attempt to clean them up to be better suited to a book like this. The above mentioned local storage code, for example, has almost as much inline CSS included in the sample as code demonstrating local storage use. That's just confusing to someone trying to concentrate on seeing what local storage is all about. Even if innocently included, it's extremely ill considered.
I cannot recommend this book for purchase.
