Strictly for newcomers to HTML 3 April 2011
By N. Krumpe - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The title "HTML5" might suggest that this is about "HTML 5". In truth, this is a book about learning HTML and CSS, and has only a little to offer in the way of the latest version.

While the last 10% of the book does address some of the new features of HTML, most of the other 90% teaches the basics of HTML (for example, 7 pages dedicated to the basics of unordered lists). And, in case that's not enough, the accompanying DVD includes TWO videos on unordered lists...one on inserting them, and one on styling them. The preface claims this book is for beginners as well as for the "working professional who just needs a quick brush-up..." Don't believe it. If you are an experienced HTML programmer looking to learn the latest features of HTML 5, you would be better off looking for a book that includes much less "brush-up" material.

As a book for beginners, this is well written and organized (something I generally count on from Wrox press). The emphasis on using CSS (cascading style sheets) is appropriate, putting newcomers on the right track by teaching them early on to separate content from style. The value of the videos is questionable, however. They largely duplicate the written content. I find it hard to imagine that very many people prefer narrated videos of people typing HTML code over typing it themselves with a textbook.

If you are just starting out with HTML, hoping to learn the basics and get a glimpse of the latest HTML5 has to offer, then this is a good book. Otherwise, experienced HTML/CSS users should look elsewhere.

NOT HTML 5 23 July 2011
By C. Heartwell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is not an HTML 5 book - it's an HTML book with an Appendix on a few new features found in HTML 5. If you don't know HTML at all, then it's a decent place to start (although I'd recommend the "For Dummies" book instead - for any version). But if you are an HTML programmer and want to move on to full HTML 5 either for web sites or web apps then this book is useless - you can get much more useful information and examples online with a quick Google search. I wasted my money on this book because I read the title, am familiar with other Wrox pubs and saw the high rating by others (but carelessly neglected to read the reviews to see that this book is simply a lightweight HTML beginner's primer with a bad title).

Excellent beginner book. 2 April 2011
By R. Parthasarathy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is an excellent beginner book for HTML5, the next generation language or iteration of plain old HTML. For more on HTML 5, look up wikipedia or the official W3C consortium page on the web. The book has a few good things going for it.
1. It assumes that the reader does not necessarily know plain vanilla HTML. This makes it a true beginner book.
2. The chapters are well laid out starting with how to view the code written all the way to embedding rich media and such. The chapters feel like they have a logical progression in the level of complexity to them.
3. The accompanying DVD has a bunch of video screen casts that complement the exercise material from the book. Some of the early lessons are really rudimentary like how to view pages on a browser but helps for a novice reader.

My only complaint with this otherwise excellent offering is the lack of source code on the accompanying DVD. The DVD appears to have a lot of free space to accommodate the sample code. I am not sure why Wrox chose to put them on their website instead. A dual approach of having on the DVD and the Web would have helped. This would save the reader the trouble of having to go to the website to pick up all the code.

The only caveat I have for the readers is that this is a "true beginners book". If you have a decent knowledge of HTML or have built websites in the past, this does not offer much in terms of new knowledge. The HTML5 standards doc describes all the new tags and how they work and that should suffice.

For the intended beginner audience, this is an excellent introduction to HTML5. Recommended.
