I found this book excellent, both in its style and content, but mostly for the sheer variety of subject matter covered.
I write freeware applications, and needed to build a website quickly to allow people to donwload the various programs I write. I didn't want to trawl through a 1000 page book on HTML, and I didn't want to have to buy a seperate book on ASP, PHP, JavaScript, etc., for the advanced features I needed. This book had it all! It gives a decent treatment to HTML, XHTML, Cascading Style Sheets, then goes on to deal with the various associated technologies, with sections on ASP, JavaScript, Java Applets, ActiveX, and PHP4. It's also got stuff on website security, server fine-tuning, and e-commerce, though as I'm not interested in this side I haven't given these sections much attention.
This book is therefore excellent for someone who wants to quickly learn the basics (and plenty of advanced features too) of HTML, and then get a decent overview of the other technologies available (such as those mentioned above). Personally I wanted both a tutorial/reference book to teach myself HTML, and a guide to using PHP to talk to a SQL database. This book covers both, and a lot more besides!
If you're looking for an exhaustive HTML guide, or an advanced JavaScript/ASP/PHP manual, this book isn't it. But if you're fairly new to the web design game, or just want to get a general knowledge of most of the popular web technologies used today, then this book is excellent.
