4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but occasionally slower than ideal 5 May 2012
By Chris K
Very nice, though occasionally sluggish opening menus and accessing stored data folders etc.

Everything about this feels like a definite, though fairly minor, upgrade from my old HTC Desire s.

Things to know:
- Small internal memory, but expandable using micro sd
- Has NO magnetomometer, so compass apps will not work, and maps will not self-orient. You also won't see an accurate direction arrow when using map navigation, although I still think that app works pretty well, particularly with the great new Car dashboard mode.
- My first full charge lasted 17hr with moderate to light use of all functions. Not bad at all, since I didn't really use any battery-saving tricks.
- I have had one crash, and a few times where it has seemed to hang..although pressing the home screen did exit the running process.
- No forward facing camera
- No yellow screen colour problems, unlike reported in some reviews I've seen. My screen is perfect.

Overall I'm happy, though I think leaving a magnetometer out was a bit silly on a phone with GPS capabilities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value 22 May 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I pre-ordered the HTC One V. I wanted a smartphone to combine the features of my iPod Touch, and my mobile phone. The price of the One V was significantly less than the other phones in the range. I gathered it was because it has a single core processor rather than multi-core. The speed of execution of the applications and graphics is great, and the presentation fluid. I have been very pleased, and the phone seems to represent the latest technology at a good price. I have admired the HTC sculpted cases since the Desire model, and the phone has a durable feel to it. Recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Initial findings: good phone, a few quirks 28 April 2012
By Tombon
Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a review based on one day's experience with the HTC One V:

If you're looking for a pay-as-you-go phone that isn't high-end (you don't need the latest and greatest processor, camera etc) and therefore doesn't have an over-the-top price tag, but you want something that won't be too dated in two years time, this maybe the phone for you.

This phone doesn't come with instructions in-the-box, so be sure to be near a computer and get instructions on HTC's website if you get confuzzled easily! ([...])

I spend a lot of time on computers but haven't had a smartphone before so I'm loving the ability to use email, social networking and utilise a seemingly endless world of apps on my phone. The QWERTY keyboard does take a bit of getting used to, but I'm sure I'll improve over time. Each 'key' is obviously fairly small but even if you mis-spell words because of big, clumsy fingers, the phone cleverly picks up on which word you want.

Some reviews on the HTC One X and S noted poor battery life. This was noticeable to me compared to my previous phone but this could be down to first time over-use and not seeking to preserve the battery as best I can by lowering the screen brightness etc. However, if you are someone who is going to be playing with the phone constantly and you're on the move, this issue may prove frustrating.

The screen is great and shows good detail (even with the brightness turned right down). The camera seems great although I haven't looked at any pictures or video on a normal-sized screen. This does not have a front-facing camera and the capture button is on-screen so I did find it very tricky taking a picture of myself. If you are not vain though or have friends, this shouldn't be an issue (but you wouldn't be able to visually Skype those friends)!

I was hoping to possibly use the phone as a dash cam whilst driving, however HTC's own 'HTC Car' mode (which conveniently provides all your in-car functions in one place) doesn't seem to have dash cam capability. This is a shame but I'm sure there's an app out there that'd do the job. The GPS (albeit in my house) was very accurate though, so this would save on having to buy a separate sat-nav (although HTC's own in-car phone holder/charger accessory (HTC CAR D130 One V Car Cradle Package) will currently set you back £45)!

Everything seems to have synced without any hassle which is nice. Most of the operation of the phone does seem to follow common-sense, but anything new will take a bit of getting used to. The one thing I am noticing is a bit of delay in some of the operation (which is why higher-end smart phones have quad-cores etc). This can be a bit annoying but hasn't caused heart-ache yet and I don't want to be one of those people who fails to appreciate the amazing achievements and progress of technology from yesteryear.

This phone takes the normal-sized sim, so you don't need to upgrade (/downsize?) to a micro-sim. You will need a micro-SD card if you plan to add music, photos, videos, apps etc as most of the phone's internal storage is taken up with pre-loaded software. The instructions say this phone accepts up to 32GB memory cards so I have ordered the SanDisk 32GB Mobile Ultra MicroSDHC Memory Card with SD Adapter, but I haven't received that yet so I won't comment on it. I haven't actually played music through it yet, so can't comment on this either.

So, as an initial summary, this phone is stylish, it's a good size for navigating, even one-handed (I do have quite long fingers though!) and is great as a phone and a toy. There is room for improvement in the battery life and delayed response at times. I may miss not having a front-facing camera and the ability to utilise it as a dash cam in HTC Car mode. But, hey, technology has come a long way since Her Majesty took the throne and I'm privileged to even be in a position where my main problem in life is struggling to take a picture of myself!
