HTC Desire Review (Android)

As I sit and write now, it seems difficult to sum up the HTC Desire, so instead let's look at what it does:

1) It's a Satnav - The HTC Desire has GPS and a very passable Satnav. What is also nice is how it integrates with google maps. Lookup a shop on the maps application, select navigate and the HTCD will direct you there. No rekeying.

2) It's an email client - It's not an exaggeration to say that since getting the HTCD, I hardly turn on my laptop to check email. Why bother ? I can manage my two email accounts on the phone and get notifications when new email arrives.

3) It's an internet browser - Not some irritating browser that you squint at or is very fiddly (like the iPhone one I've used before), but something quite smart. Zoom in with a two finger gesture and the browser homes in on the column of text and fits it to the screenwidth. Nice feature. On top of that, the screen is very clear and easy to read. The long and the short of it is that the laptop stays off for Internet bowsing.

4) It's a portable office - I am writing this review in a word document on my phone using 'Documents to go' combined with a hand writing recognition app called 'grafitti'. Both bought for less than 5 pounds. This also includes a simple Excel and Power point editor. They are basic however....

5) It's a social network client - Actually this sells it short. The built in widgets can display updates without having to run a separate app. It means you get updates from friends that seems like it's real time (although it obviously isn't). Take a photo 'touch' 'share' and your photo is uploaded. Very smart.

6) It's a document organizer (note this iPhone) -
What's the main drawback on the iPhone? Apple lock the os down so tight that there is no easy way to manage documents. On Android, it works like a computer. this means that I can move my documents where I want them and then setup shortcuts to the folders or documents on my desktop, just like a pc. Cool.

7) It's a 5 megapixel camera - and it takes nice photos, has a built in flash and gives me the opportunity to specify what to focus on, by touch.

8) It's a video camera

9) It's an MP3 player and multimedia player

10) It's an FM radio and uses the headphone lead as an ariel.

11) And did I mention it's also a phone ?

In short, it's a computer in your pocket with a 4gb sd card, expandable up to 32gb.

So what's the drawback?

Well there are a few, so it's good to be aware of what they are:

- It's not the easiest to use. If you struggle with your home pc, take my advice and get yourself an iPhone. This is like having a computer in your pocket.

- Android 2.1 limits how many applications you can download from the android market by only allowing you to install them to phone memory instead of SD card memory. Whoops ! This is fixed in Android 2.2 (froyo) which is out now as a free upgrade.

- Buy, buy, buy a screen protector. It makes no difference to the HTC desire operation and it needs it!

- The biggest drawback is the battery life which just isn't good enough. The standard battery doesn't last a normal day which has you either charging at your desk at work, buying a backup battery pack charger or going for a thicker extended battery. This is the phone's single biggest drawback and probably the only reason that I'd look at something else next time.

Overall, this is a brilliant device. Can't see myself looking at an iPhone in future. Enjoy :)

I can not recomend this Android phone enough.

To be honest I wanted an iPhone but this was cheaper in the short and long run so I thought I'd give it a try.
To begin with I hated it! It wasn't intuitive like an iPhone, it seemed complex and I thought I couldnt load my iTunes onto it. I had a week to return it, which I planed to do and upgrade to the iPhone, but after a week of fiddling around and playing with it (which you won't be able to stop doing) I started to see it's potential.
I have had it a month now and it still amazes me every day!

Now I'll save you alot of time and bother by recomending some apps. If you want to Sync your iTunes onto it you have a few choices, doubleTwist (desktop and phone app)which is free (but personally I found it very faulty), or some paid apps all around a couple of quid (but worth it!), after trying a couple (you can uninstall paid apps VIA ANDROID MARKET/downloads on your phone within 24 hours if you dont like them and you won't get charged)I found iSyncr by far the best, its under £2 and you don't have to download anything onto your PC/MAC it even has a step by step set up guide.
Please note, some iTunes music is ''protected'' and won't sync to anything non Apple, this is Apple's fault, no-one elses! But to be fair not many are proteced. (If you want to check your albums, in your iTunes library right click on the album and left click on get info. If it sais Purchased AAC file it will sync to an Android, if it sais Protected AAC file it won't.)

The music player on the phone is OK but leaves alot to be desired, again I tried a good few but found 'Music PlayerPro' (also under £2) to be by far the best! Even better than an iPod. Or if your a cheapskate the best free one in my opinion was '3' cubed player.

Amazon MP3 app will allow you to download songs and albums directly to your phone just like an iPhone with iTunes store. (But you must enable '1-click' on your Amazon account online first)

There are hundreds of fantastic APPs on the Android Market and about half are free! You can even get antivirus free.

But what really sets this phone apart from the iPhone is the abbility to customize it. You have 5 home screens (one in the middle and two each side you can slide too and you can add/remove and move around any shortcuts you want!
Put the buttons where they suit you, you can also have widgets (the clock/weather in the picture is a widget) E.G. you can have a list of web page bookmars on one, a giant analog clock on another, a whole month calander on another, or just fill a page with app buttons or combine buttons an widgets, it's entirely up to you!

Also the camera is superb, better than my digital camera!
The only thing that lets it down is the battery life but it's no worse than any other smart phone.

To wrap up, my Girlfriend laughed when I first got this phone and said it was a poor mans iPhone, now she sais she wishes she had one!

Here are a few must haves if you have this phone:

It only comes with a 4GB memory card so I recomend getting a bigger capacity one, 8, 16 or 32 GB. This one's best value for money.
KOMPUTERBAY 16GB microSD microSDHC Memory Card with free N111 USB 2.0 Reader and SD Adapter - High Speed Class 4

This is inccreddible value for money and an essential. (comes in different colours).
HTC DESIRE TRIPLE ACCESSORY PACK RED HYDRO GEL CASE -SCREEN PROTECTOR & CAR CHARGER

This is not essential but very handy. As I said the battery life is pretty short so it's good to have a spare charger for the bedroom or work or partners place or... and at that price it's rude not to!
Micropix - Mains Charger For HTC Desire / HD2 / HD Mini / Legend / Wildfire / BlackBerry 9700 Bold / 8900 Curve / 8520 / Storm 2 / 9500 Storm / Palm pre / Google Nexus One / Elm / Hazel / Xperia X10 / Nokia N96 / N97 / N85 / N86 8MP & All Other Devices ...

I bought one of these today, cost me £25 in Dixons but I was more than happy to part with the cash as my battery had died and I needed my phone, just wish I had bought one before for half the money! Never leave home without it.
PowerChimp' Portable Charger - Blue

Well I hope you found my review helpfull.
Don't give up on it after a few days like I nearly did, give it a chance and you will be greatly rewarded!!

5.0 out of 5 stars HTC Legend Vs HTC Desire 1 May 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
Right.. before all, I have to say that if you even thinking about going for HTC Hero, you shouldn't read this post... Even though Hero is good, but it is OLD and very OVERPRICED!

Here:
I've had used Legend for about 3 weeks. As a matter of fact, it is in my other room (waiting to be returned and refunded). I am now using the HTC Desire and am planning to keep it for the next year or so.

The price difference between a Desire and a Legend about 20-30 quid... but this is what you'll get:

HTC Legend has these:
* 3.2" Screen - not properly calibrated and QWERTY keyboard does not work properly because of that...or maybe I have fat fingers :S
* 320 X 480 HVGA Resolution
* 2GB SD card
* 600MHz CPU
* 384Mb RAM
* GSM and WiFi antenna is placed on the little black plastic on the bottom of the phone
* Camera is proper proper smooth, and when there is enough light, there is almost no lag between the real image, and the image displayed on the screen - Oh, its 5M pixel
* Optical Ball is not so accurate (this one... I can't have too fat a finger!)

HTC Desire features:
* 3.7" Screen - Screen is properly configured and calibrated. Screen is slightly more brighter in comparison to Legend. QWERTY is properly configured and is very reliable
* 480 X 800 WVGA - Screen is wider, and a higher resolution. Photos added to the widget (like the people's widget) display a much sharper image. Web-browsing is much much better.
* 4GB SD card (already inserted into the phone)
* 1GHz CPU - For those who say it doesn't make a difference, it actually does. HTC Legend is often laggy when you switch programs, or just simply switch from one homepage to another one or use one of the HTC widgets. HTC Desire is PROPER smooth, unless you use one of the animated backgrounds
* 576Mb RAM - Almost twice the RAM that you get with Legend. Legend lacks a LOT when a few programs run at the background. Desire is smooth. I have tried to run up to 21 background application, and there was just a 'tiny' bit lag when I tried to move around (21 applications!)
* GSM and WiFi antenna positions are unknown. But I definitely got better GSM connections, and my WiFi connection NEVER broke!
* Camera is a tad-bit laggy in comparison to Legend, but nothing that you should be worried about. This most probably is due to displaying the image on a bigger image.
* Optical ball is proper sensitive, and is very reliable.
* Speaker is a bit less louder than HTC Legend.

Up to now, I have had no problems with the phone at all. Internet browsing is much better than HTC Legend, and iPhone/iPod. Flash player is fine.

So I leave the ultimate comparison to you...

20quid more, and you get all that...worth it?

Hope this was useful.
