After buying this phone and using it for a week or so, I decided to send the phone back for a refund. Whilst its by no means a bad handset (far from it), there were some annoying bugs that affected how I used my phone which will be explained as follows.

Context: I have been an Android user for a long time. Did have a Nexus 4 pre-ordered but my trusty HTC Desire died on me so I needed a phone and quick. I have had my eye on this WP8 handset for a while and thought seen as though this will probably be a stopgap handset, I would give WP8 a try. As my usage doesn't extend beyond texting, the odd call, music, social networking and checking email on the fly, I went for the more budget friendly 8S as opposed to the 8X as it does what I need it to do. Here are a few thoughts based on my usage so far.

Build Quality: Build quality is good, very solid. Have no complaints here so far.

Specs: On first glance, and when compared to other phones the specs don't look fantastic. But the following points need to be considered.
- This is an entry level handset (albeit a high end entry level handset) and needs to be compared to other entry level handsets, not high end handsets that are £200 + more expensive.
- This is Windows Phone 8, not Android. Acknowledged, if you put Android on a phone with similar specs to this it would probably chug. Not Windows Phone 8. Putting other frustrations aside with the OS, although it does stutter at times, it runs much smoother than any Android phone I have played with of the same specs.

Battery Life: so far this has been quite strong. Again putting things into context, yes it is only a 1700mAh battery, but it is only powering a 1ghz dual core processor, 512mb ram and a 4inch 800 x 400 screen.

The windows OS is amazing. Layout is clean, easy to use and understand. Touchscreen is smooth and not laggy. The battery's not the best but it will probably last you the day. Its really nice to hold and its is light.
This is the best phone i have ever had!

The longer you own this phone the more it becomes part of you.
While limited as to the number of Apps available the 8S does very nicely thank you. Perhaps it is not for the younger market with all the relevant gimmicks? It does however, have everything that a traveller/business user would need including an excellent downloadable diary app., good weather forecasting facilities, financial market updates et., etc.,

I was not impressed with Windows 8 OS on my ageing desk top, but on this phone it comes into its own. It has a good reception ability and manages to receive signals in areas that my previous phone could not. In short it works very well with similar processes and ability as the Windows RT series. The finger touch screen is slick and moves easily where and when required, with a solid feel to the whole instrument. Adding an expandable memory card increases the power of this smart phone and subsequent photos are of excellent quality, especially considering the cost..
I give this little phone a 5 star, simply because it would suit the older user and satisfy all their needs, including an excellent GPS should the need arise.
While SKYPE can be used, the phone does not have a front face camera, a little disappointing, but at the price understandable.
When I see my wife's smart phone I would have liked a slightly larger screen, but then again, price does place its part.
Everything about this little phone feels good and at the price is a great purchase. It came sealed and well packaged. Keep with your service provider as a smaller than the large SIMM card is required, see specs for details.

After my iPhone 4 died I found myself struggling to justify spending nearly 4 time the cost of the HTC 8S on a new iPhone, when broadly speaking, the two devices perform the same function.

Having never used a Windows 8 device before, I found this phone remarkably easy to adapt to, although I confess I still ocasionally find myself tapping the 'search' button when holding the device during normal usage.

The phone hardware itself is really quite solid - significantly lighter than an iPhone with a rubberised texture. Surprisingly, the rubber effect doesn't make the phone feel cheap. The only issue I have with the build quality is the 'Gorilla Glass' screen. Through absolutely normal (erring on the side of cautious - I haven't even dropped it yet!) usage, I have managed to put three small scratches on the screen. This doesn't detract from the phone's usability at all, but is a little frustrating and suggests Gorilla Glass isn't all it's cracked up to be.

My other major disappointment with this phone is the sound, and judging by other reviews, this doesn't appear to be an isolated issue. I purchased the phone knowing that I could run Spotify off it, hence the 'small' 16Gb was less of an issue. Unfortunately I have discovered that when listening to Spotify through headphones (in offline mode, not even streaming), every few minutes a LOT of interference suddenly kicks in, deafens you with white noise for a couple of minutes, then continues playing normally. I have discovered that pressing pause when the interference starts and then pressing play immediately after temporarily solves this issue. The music often also jumps/skips/pauses for a millisecond.
