4.0 out of 5 stars Generally a good book if a bit vague in places 6 Nov 2001
By A Customer
If you need to learn HP-UX and are new to Unix then this is a good book. In my own case I am already familiar with a number of other Unix's and had a need to fill in the blanks with HP-UX. This made the second part of the book very useful and the first and third much less so. There are other books that cover subjects such as the Shell or TCP/IP or DNS et al. in far more detail than this one.
Even so I found Part II which covers the kernel, booting and hardware (the things that differ between manufacturers) worth having if expensive considering I paid full price for a third of the book.
If you are new to Unix and need an HP-specific book then I would certainly recommend this book save for the very high price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of HPUX certification 24 May 2001
The book covers all major aspects of HPUX admin, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, I initailly brought the book for the HPUX administration course but felt that the book helped me in the working environment. The book outlines all apects of HPUX in a clear and concise manner, covering major areas of HPUX including topics which I found difficult to grasp such as backups, networking and scheduling jobs. I would recommend this book not just for users who are training for the examination but also for system admins in HPUX in the real world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - well worth the money! 4 Jun 2001

I think it would be fair to say that this is probaly the most well written and easy to read computer book I have ever purchased! Well written, good topic progression, and good question and review sections to make you stop and think. If you want to get certified, want to learn more about HP-UX, or just want a good reference book this is the book for you. As a side note, it is nice to see that it has a hard back. All too often, expensive computer books are paper back, and don't last the distance. Stupid when you think that most computer books are kept for a long time as reference material!
Well done Rafeeq and HP! This book should be a benchmark for other publishers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good intro to HP-UX 19 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Being a novice in the Unix-world, I turn to this book whenever I have a question on HP-UX and almost always get an answer or a clue on where to search for the exact answer. In particular the chapters concerning shell-scripting has been of great use to me. They are easy read and have good examples. Some chapters concerning spesific system administration goes a little above my head but are though interesting to read as it brings some understanding of the Unix-system.

This book appears to hit the spot in combining HP/UX sys admin help with the knowledge required to pass the HP test. (A bit like the UK Highway Code). With structured help and tests, the reader, with some prior UNIX knowledge, should be able to be taken through to certification success by the author (Ill find out soon !)
The book is clearly laid out, and would be a useful reference once certification is achieved.
Access to an HP/UX system is recommended, but not absolutely essential for exam prep.
The book is perhaps expensive for an individual to purchase, an asset for company purchase, and an awful lot cheaper than HP structured classes !
