5.0 out of 5 stars Great device. Big step up from the TX2. 2 Mar 2010
Verified Purchase
I had a TX2 for a few weeks until I decided that I couldn't live with it anymore and exchanged it by a TM2 so I'm quite happy to share my impressions:

First thing is that no other tablet convertible laptop offers as much value for money. For under 800, this is definitely a great buy.

Pros:
- Battery lasts ages. I haven't measured yet, but when using it in Windows 7's balanced mode I can use it through the day without needing to charge the battery. That includes WI-FI and/or mobile broadband usage.
- The computer runs cool and silent. One of the main problems I had with the TX2 was the constant fan noise and heat dissipation.
- Performance is on par with the TX2. The Intel Pentium SU4100 that comes in this device benchmarks about 5% lower than the AMD Turion RM-77 but in real life usage it performs as well as the former.
- Wacom digitiser. When using extensive handwriting with the pen I would have to go to the N-Trig options and disable touch input, otherwise I would have constant issues with it picking both hand and pen inputs and changing windows, cancelling texts and so on. This is not an issue with the Wacom digitizer that seems to be very good at ignoring hand inputs when using the pen. Also the Wacom digitiser is compatible with pretty much all graphics applications and provides all the functionality you would expect.
- Image quality. The display is now sharp and full of contrast making it great for images. I can put it side-by-side with my MacBook Pro now and it won't look as bad as the TX2 grainy display did.
- Dual graphics cards: I don't play games or do that much multimedia in this tablet PC so having the more power efficient Intel GPU available when on battery mode is great.

4.0 out of 5 stars TM2 1010EA 18 Feb 2010
This review is for the 1010EA version which is currently the only version available in the UK.

This ships with the SU4100 1.3 GHz processor; in the US, the HP store allows our US friends to specify the SU7300 1.3Ghz or SU9600 1.6GHz - both at quite a price premium. The SU4100 is on a par with the SU7300, but lacks Windows XP mode and has 2MB of cache versus 3MB. CPU benchmarks indicate that the difference is very negligible, something like 2-3%.

On the plus side, the UK version ships with the external DVDRW (in the same brushed aluminium effect) and the snazzy laptop case - both of which our US and European cousins don't get. After much pontificating, I decided the UK model is in fact a better deal.

The machine itself largely lives up to my expectations. It is fast, has a long battery life (easily 5 hours with no power-saving features enabled, likely to be an hour or so more if you lower brightness etc) as well as a dedicated graphics card so you can play decent games.

The machine is bigger and heavier than I expected for a 12", certainly there are 12" machines out there which are a bit thinner and lighter - but they aren't touchscreens. However on the plus side I would say the weight adds to the overall feeling of quality and solidity.

Touch functions take some getting used to. It is not as responsive as my iPod Touch but close. There have been some issues with power saving mode delaying touch response if you don't interact for 10 seconds or more, but there is an active user community out there looking for fixes and tweaks and this has now been resolved. No doubt HP will come out with it's own updates in due course.

Overall, very pleased with this machine and would recommend it to anyone looking for a fairly powerful laptop, with a modern design and touch capabilities.

4.0 out of 5 stars One day all laptops could be like this 12 Mar 2010
By A. Rose
I'm writing this review using a TM2 via the windows 7 handwriting regognition. Other reviews have detailed many of the good features so I'll try not to repeat them. This is a good sized portable device at around 12"-(slightly larger than a sheet of A4 paper). The capacitive touch screens very responsive and the pen digitiser works very well. The screen has a power saving setting out of the box that can make you think that the touchscreen doesn't always respond. This can be turned oft via the device manager, giving you a fast-responsive screen without any noticeable affect on battery life. Speaking of which, I've had around 7 hours usage on one charge.

The fingerprint reader makes password management very easy. This works with Windows logon as well as websites in IE and Firefox. The speakers are O.k.- Loud, clear, but lacking base. Screen brightness is also decent but the glossy screen can hinder outdoor use. Weight wise, this is heavy for it's size although the slightly offset weight distribution helps. You would feel the weight if you intend to hold it on your arm all day. It is also worth noting the lack of noise and the dual graphics feature that allows you to use a more powerful graphics card for HD Video and Intel graphics when you want to save power.

software:
The device has 2 point multi-touch. Windows 7 includes a number of gestures that will work with a great many programs. HP have also included a number of touch software to demo the system. This includes the Windows 7 touch pack.

Overall, I'm very impressed with the device. It has changed the way that I use computers.
