I have an iMac OSX 10.2.6 so - some software you can get will run in the earlier classic environments only... but no problem here, it installed quickly and easily in the current operating system.
This is a good basic scanner that will do everything you want if you are a home / small business user. I use it to scan artwork and photographic negatives - results have been excellent so far.
If you are new to scanning, HP includes a 'Precautions for scanning at high resolution' sheet, which is helpful becasue you really don't need those high res. options unless you are wanting a large photographic quality print from something the size of a stamp! These sensible warnings should stop people getting disapointing slow results - that are no fault of the scanner. If you want to scan at high res, you need to be clear you computer and printer are up to it - no point scanning in at 48 bit colour if your printer can't handle it, or it's gonna be a massive file size that will crash the computer etc. I read a review on here I thought was a little unfair as (with respect) perhaps the writer had run into some of these issues?
I found this an effective piece of kit. It will do what you need, unless you are one of those nice nerdy people(!) who has to have top-of-the-range in order to sleep at night! Bear in mind scanners will be able to capture much more data that you will often need, so it was good to see some guidance from the manufacturer on this.

The Scanjet 3570c looks great (sleek blue cover) and promises good resolutions, however, it only produces quick results at lower resolutions. At higher resolutions it can be too slow to even bother with.
So far I've tried the following:
Scanning a photo in the Millions of Colours setting at resolutions of 200, 600 and 1200. 200 took 25 seconds, 600 took 2 minutes and 1200 took 4 minutes to do the actual scan and then took forever to actually process the image. I had to do an End Task as it was taking so long - but I guess that's just my PC that's at fault. Or is it?
Scanning a negative using the transparency holder that's built into the lid in the Millions of Colours setting at resolutions of 200, 600 and 1200. 200 took 35 seconds, 600 took 1 minute 22 seconds and 1200 took 2 minutes 33 seconds. At 200 the resulting picture was just too blocky to see properly and even at 600 it wasn't great. So if you want a decent scan of a negative, you'll need to use 1200.
One thing that confused me was the fact that you can pick a resolution of 9600. The box says the max resolution is 1200, so where does 9600 come from? I did try it at 9600, but gave up after 2 minutes when the progress bar was only on the first block! I did also try acquiring an image using a paint package to see if it would fair any better and again tried 9600, but I just got an error saying there wasn't enough space on my (80Gb) Hard drive!!??
There are quite a lot of options on the scan window for making adjustments if you don't like the way the preview looks: Resize, Lighten/Darken, Sharpen, Colour Adjustment, Resolution, Mirror and Invert Colours. One handy feature is that if you put something in the scanner wonky, it will automatically straighten it up for you.

This scanner is the best scanner I have ever used, it not only scans with good quality it also gives you a range of editing options on the scanning quality eg brightness, colour contrast, size, area of section you want to scan etc.
Its also excellent for scanning individual slides or negatives. I love this scanner and would advise anyone out there to look into investing in one of these. Its got a good, funky sleek light blue cover to it and and excellent design. Its not at all slow and gives you excellent service.
Happy scanning!
