This device has replaced a 5-year-old 250gb external hard drive and it's better for several obvious reasons:-
1. It's a lot smaller and lighter - not much bigger than a Blackberry smartphone (so it's portable)
2. It doesn't need an independent power supply
3. It's very quiet
4. It has huge capacity - 1 tb
5. It's so simple
6. It even looks cool
Setting up the device is child's play. Simply connect the supplied USB cable (2.0 to 3.0) and that's it! In my case, linked to a Sony laptop, there was literally nothing else to do. Just plug and play. An ice-blue light comes on to show that the device is on (there's no on/off switch) and ready to be used for back-up files. No formatting needed, although again I can only speak for my own combination.
There are other competing products that appear to offer similar spec or better for lower prices (such as the highly-rated Western Digital Elements 2 TB External Desktop Hard Drive (USB 2.0, Black)
, and for not a great deal more it's possible to get a more versatile type of drive that offers wireless home networking, which could make for better value. But taking this HP portable drive at face value, and judging it by what it is rather than what it could be, it's very hard to fault as it's fast and quiet and has as much storage capacity as I am likely to need. Its compact size and portability are key advantages.
