I have a Canon 8-ink printer which produces superb images and an F9900 A4 Scanner but neither is wireless and for convenience I need a single unit that can operate wirelessly. So I bought this one as I managed to buy it at a really low price of £89 which included two full sets of inks and 100 sheets of HP paper. Now for my observations.

The Excellent points: really easy and trouble-free wireless set-up procedure, I use W7, simply follow instructions as presented on the CD-Rom; truly impressive results from scans, which it can do wirelessly to a pc or Mac, or direct to memory card, colours are vibrant and images sharp; scans seem faithful to the originals. Can be paired to more than one pc. An A4 colour scan produced a file size of 2.88mb and 2328x1693 pixels. A pdf version of the same document was 1.81mb.

Lovely intuitive touch screen to use with or without pc connection, if desired, printing photos from memory card, and scanning to it, and for direct copying, all up to A4.

The Good: Two front loading paper stacking trays - one for A4 and the other for photo paper, which can be loaded at the same time. Standard footprint making unit fairly flexible in its location

The compromise i.e. the not quite so good: Photo quality is not up with the best. Relying on only four inks does mean that some compromises have to be made, but nevertheless, photos are still quite good, but ranking no more than average+, but see comment below about paper. On HP's own paper mages are sharp, but lack a little sparkle and in shadow areas look quite muddy producing little definition. The colour gamut is restricted by only using 3 colour inks + black. Experimenting with different brands of photo paper produced a surprising result. The 6x4 HP recommended glossy paper and Epson glossy produced no discernible differences, despite really looking, making me wonder if the original manufacturer is the same.

The surprise was Kodak Ultima Ultra Glossy paper. This yielded images with more contrast and vibrancy with the added contrast seemingly pulling out micro-detail only hinted at in the HP and Epson prints. Of the brands of paper I use, this would be my preferred one for this printer. But there is a but and it is a big but: Ultima paper is not as porous as the other brands. Whereas prints on HP and Epson come out more or less dry, Ultima prints come out wet and need at least 24r hours to dry before they can be safely handled. So, whilst printing they must not be allowed to stack upon one another, nor should they be handled until completely dry.

The Dire: Running costs. Let's not beat about the bush: this printer will be expensive to run based on current ink costs and the stingy amount of ink in each cartridge. With the facility to re-fill being blocked by HP and no compatible inks on the market, you are locked into HP's pricing strategy. HP single ink tanks cost around the same price as Canon's, but HP contains only 3ml compared to Canon tanks containing 9ml. With comparable prices for printers, you can do you own math regarding running costs. You will really need to shop around for the best deals to keep running costs as low as possible.

I have given the unit an overall 4 Star rating as I not feel its photo printing quality fully justifies an extra Star despite its simplicity and ease of use and superb scanning ability. Then there is the on-going cost of running, although I have NOT factored this in to my overall rating, as value for money decisions are all relative and personal and do not add or detract from performance.

Bought this on 20th Feb 2010. Came on time and all stuff was there. Didn't realise that the photo paper that comes with it is only a small pack (approx 5 sheets?) of postcard size, so that was a bit of a problem for the pictures I wanted to print at first.

USB cable didn't work on mine, so had real problems connecting my laptop to the printer so the printer could access my wireless router settings so I could enable wireless. Had to go and buy another printer USB cable just to get the printer added to the network.

Gives lovely images when printing photos, but I am a bit dubious about the estimates of pages per cartridge. I just printed off 13 A4 colour pics plus 5 bits and pieces of web pages, and already the inks on all 3 colour cartidges are low, with warning symbols flashing on the printer to renew the cartridges.

So, overall, prints very well, just not as economical as I was led to believe, plus some snags setting it up.

I decided last year, on grounds of space, to replace my desktop with a laptop, and to get a wireless printer/scanner.

This one was favourably reviewed, and not too expensive, so I went for it. So far, so no problems! In Windows 7, it fires up perfectly, and prints from anywhere I choose to send. Scanning also works well, though to get really good images, you may want to tweak the settings, as always.

More interestingly, this can also work wirelessly with Ubuntu 9,10, which was a pleasant surprise. You want to install hplip 3.9.12 from the web (Google for it), then go through its install via a terminal command, but it does get there without much hassle. Well done HP.

    Good but expensive to run.
Excellent quality prints from this but it costs a bomb to run, as is typical of HP printers, so beware. Don't be fooled by the low price of the machine. Read more
