I took delivery of this printer yesterday, I had done a little research including a visit to the HP website and found that this model of the printer is the current updated version of the HP 8600. Reviews on the older model were predominantly positive including the fact that it was a recommended printer by a number of computer magazines.

Compared to my broken Canon Pixma it was replacing, it is a lot taller, but about the same width and depth. It is also heavier but I hope that indicates that it is made of better quality materials. Take care lifting it out of the box, at 14kg you'll not want to drop it on your toe.

I plugged it in, connected it to the telephone line, a USB lead and to the Ethernet socket of my router. Next I looked for the instructions on how to get the ink cartriges in but found no references in the enclosed booklet. Things have moved on from paper instructions. Switch it on and all the instructions can be found by using the printer touch screen. There are even instructional videos to show you how to set everything up. It is extremely intuitive.

Full marks for making it so easy to start up. It will take a few minutes to boot and set up, then afterwards it will ask if you wish to update the software to the most recent update. Every step of the way can be followed on the touch screen.

Once completed it then tells you to install the software on your PC or Mac. Use the enclosed CD which in installs the latest drivers from the web and not the CD. I had no problems with either installation, my Mac or on my wife's Win 7 PC. It also works with Bonjour if like me you have a dual boot Macbook with a Windows 7 installation.

AirPrint worked flawlessly with my iPhone and iPad.

This is an excellent, robust printer which looks and feels very well-made - worth paying a little bit extra for a really professional home-office machine. Early days for me, but so far so good. Everything functions well, print quality is superb, machine is relatively quiet with no vibration on the desk. It's pretty big, so not for basic home use...but if you're working from home, then I would say this is the standout choice for around the £200.00 mark. I read lots of reviews before buying and am very glad I settled on this one.

Set-up is very easy and the control panel display is intuitive. I initially had a problem getting my Mac to recognise the printer on the network, but this turned out to be a Mcafee firewall issue & nothing to do with Apple or HP - as soon as I switched the firewall off, my Mac recognised the printer on the network, so just requires a change of security settings. HP support were fantastic and sorted it all for me in a matter of minutes via remote access.

Although the ink is, as ever, pretty expensive - the XL high capacity cartridges look to be very good value with the black cartridge claiming to be good for 2,300 sheets, or less than 1p per page at Amazon ink prices.

This arrived on time, well packaged and as described. I had a previous HP printer which was getting old and creaky (literally) so we took the decision to get rid of the two stand alone printers and invest in a web based network one so we could print from desktops, laptops, tablets and phones. I run a small business from home and having reliable equipment which is easy to run and maintain is critical and this printer does the job. I can email it print jobs wherever I am and pick them up when I get back to my home office, I can work on the laptop or the ipad in any part of the house and send stuff to print and all the others in the family can also use it, from any device - superb.

However, the real star in all this was the simplicity of installation and configuration - it was sooooooo incredibly easy, no need to spend hours setting it all up, it was a doddle, so completely automatic.

A tip on replacement cartridges - It comes with starter packs of ink and I ordered high yield replacements for use when they run out. The ones I bought as part of the Amazon "buy together" deal were c£75, but there were two complete packs in the deal - even better.

After many years of abuse my HP 5610 developed problems that TLC would not cure, so the moment had come to look for a replacement, bad news, not being a technophile this can be frustrating,, cables everywhere whilst you connect to the web, options to chose from that can have dire consequences and that's after you have chosen one of the many options / models / brands available.

Chose HP 8620 on the basis of ink usage and speed, unpacked it, every time I thought I had finished I found another strip of protective cover, which is a pain. However having read the reviews, did not link it to PC straight away, Plugged it in turned it on and followed the instructions on the printer, then loaded disc, as instructed, answered the limited number of questions and within 6 minutes the printer is working, and wireless to boot. If you want a fast effective printer look no further, Even the wife likes it.

This was a replacement for an Officejet 4500 that had done good service but had started to jam and not scan well. I wanted a wireless printer (my first) but was a little nervous about set-up, complexity and reliability of printing. Also I was unsure how the printer would cope with multiple devices and scanning of multiple documents. Previous reviews reassured me on most of these points. I also wondered whether it was worth the investment, after all there are many good printers available for less.

First impressions are that this is an excellent device. The installation is quick, easy and almost fully automatic. The touch screen is clear and easy to use. Printing works well (although there is a delay mid-page when printing the first page, not a major issue and possibly due to my wireless signal?). Once under way, printing is smooth and fast. Quality is good in absolute terms and relative to the 4500. Blacks are denser, colours more rich (on the same paper stock). I have not checked ppm but it seems in line with the spec. It is good to have a decent sized paper bin. Scanning has been smooth and fast although on one occasion I had to re-feed sheets to get better alignment, possibly I had not set the paper guides properly. I have not used the fax but the facility is there if needed.

I have connected 2 laptops and the printer knows which is which automatically. I can also print from my phone using HP's e-print app. I have not owned the printer long enough to comment on cartridge usage. A replacement set of 4 cartridges is expensive but others have mentioned the low ink consumption of this printer. I don't know if it is significant but this printer does not go through all the cleaning noise exercises that the 4500 used to. I hope this is a good sign.

Overall, very pleased with this printer so far in all respects.
