We have been using this device for a while now. It does have its funny moments and you do occasionally need to restart the software on your PC, but it worked well enough for the family to all share one printer. BUT:

a) The setup software is really cranky and poorly written.

b) There are NO Windows7 x64 drivers or even Windows7 drivers. We don't have any PCs in the house now that can configure this device and our newest PC arrived FROM HP with Windows7 x64. HP needs to update its software so that its devices don't go end of life so quickly

Hi all,

this item was an excellent surprise, my dad has an Epson DX4450 multifunction printer and he was tired that he had to turn on the PC all the time...

I was a bit worried due to previous bad experiences with hp printer routers, but this was a very nice surprise.

I unpacked everything (2 usb cables, a micro to standard usb, and another usb printer cable, the power supply and the router itself), and for a change, I followed the instructions carefully :)

So, I inserted the DVD and followed the instructions on screen and voilá, besides the 10 minutes waiting for the epson site to deliver the drivers (even with a 50 Mb connection from my side), it all worked right from the box.

In 15 minutes I had one laptop (XP Professional) and one PC (with Windows 7) printing and scanning (one operation and one client at a time, no simultaneous usage).

Very happy with the purchase and I would buy it again!!!

Works somewhat OK, but tends to lock itself sometimes. Is not recognised by a second PC, when one PC is already connected to it. I buy it to share the printer between several PC, and it does not fill this purpose.

I already have an HP F380 all-in-one printer and up to 4 computers that I wish to share it with. As I already have a wireless network - I purchased this device.
Following the instructions I ended up with sucessfull wireless printing and scanning. Just make sure that the firewall software on each PC/Laptop sees the IP Address of the 2101 as a 'trusted' source otherwise the Connection Manager software will see the printer but be unable to connect to it. Also wise to check on the HP website for compatibility with your printer.
As I can now print or scan wirelessly from/to any PC/Laptop on my network - be it an XP or Vista device - I am happy.
The system has subsequently proved reliable and easy to use so I can recommend it.

The specs for this wireless print server say it can handle WPA wireless encryption but I've tried to set it up several times, using both a PC and a Mac, and it just won't connect to the network. From what I've read on forums about this print server, I suspect I could get it to work if I switch my network to WEP encryption, but since this can be easily broken, it means I'd have to leave my network unsecured.

I've even tried downloading the setup software from HP (in case there was an update to fix the setup problems) but to no avail. As far as I can see, this print server is not much use unless you're willing to risk running it on an unsecured network.

I wouldn't recommend this to anybody.

I have had this product working with Windows 7 for I think the last 1-2 years. Yes if you talk to HP (you'd have to be mad to try) or look at their website for this product it doesn't mention Windows 7, and you won't find any meaningful support from HP. But I notice it does come with a Vista (= Windows 7 Beta) driver and I haven't had any problems running it with Windows 7 - you just have to load up from the clunky installation CD they give you instead of expecting Windows 7 to find the driver online. At my home I have had the thing working on a Dell XP machine, an Acer Windows 7 lap top, an HP Vista lap top, an HP Windows 7 lap top, a Dell Windows 7 machine and an Asus Windows 7 netbook. It's currently working on 3 Windows 7 lap tops at once no problem. That's a pretty broad range of tests!

Yes it is a bit quirky in use. Other people mention the fact you can only print from one computer at a time - but all you have to do is right mouse click an icon to get a wireless connection from the computer you want to print from. Compared to running upstairs with your lap top to plug into the printer - that's life-changing functionality (LOL). I print some pretty chunky presentations (e.g. 5MB) and I have never had the print server 'hang' with the file size, and I know that's a problem other people have had with other branded print servers.

My advice: give it a try. The price is right on this product and the only explanation I can think of is that reviews on Amazon aren't that great. Keep the packaging and send it back if it doesn't work (Amazon is great on returns), and let other people know how you got on.

I felt I had to write a review because so many people here are moaning about lack of Windows 7 support (this is the first review I have ever bothered to write, despite spending a small fortune with Amazon over the years). I really can't understand their experiences because it's definitely not true for me.

On the plus side: it is really small, just as you would expect (but don't get from the pictures)

On the minus side: I am feel completely robbed. It just doesnt work with anything. It requires installing a software for setting it up (which is fair enough, but I hate having to be forced to install programs, I rather install just the driver or in the case of routers use the web interface), and that's where the problems started. The drivers don't work with Snow Leopard (Mac), so if you have a recent mac give up there.

Luckily I have an older Mac, which installed the application with no problems ... nearly. The installer popped up with warnings in the log, but it seemed to work. The problem is that it will not connect to the network. When setting it up it says that you can connect to WPA network, but in practice it just doesn't.

I understand that now a days this is an outdated solution, there really is no reason why you would buy this rather than a printer with wireless built in, so HP has no real reason to worry... but they really are flipping off consumers with older products. That's really not good PR.

So if any one in HP sees this (probably not), just make a firmware update, how long could it take you ... seriously, they don't have any updates for installers, drivers or firware since version 1.0.2 or so.

In a nutshell: don't buy this, save up and get a wireless printer / scanner / photocopier / espresso maker.
