This is the second HP all-in-one type of printer I have purchased and installed the drivers/applications on about 5 different PCs in all. The printer HW is very good, full featured and amazingly priced. But if the SW does not install first time you are hosed. I have found on two machine it completely disrupts the normal operation of the machine, making it run really slowly at best and regularly crashing at worst. The software takes forever to install, in a network situation (not this model) it persistently fails to find the printer, and takes even longer to uninstall! This last install has taken me 3 days off ond on! It is way too big and too cumbersome and too unreliable - there is just too many ways it can fail and when it does it leaves the system in a mess. So sorry HP, you made a monster; I would highly recommend anybody who is not an IT professional not to touch this because you will screw up your system.

I felt compelled to warn potential buyers about software issues with this printer/scanner. My experience was, although initially very impressed with the print quality and photocopying of the unit, my computers performance had been compromised.

At first I thought the computer had a virus ( even though it has the Kapersky Internet suite installed ). I found that when first switched on, it would take the usual 1 or 2 minutes to to boot up the desktop screen and the accompanying windows fanfare music ( uhggg!! ),then it would hang for 3 or 4 minutes, with the hard disk wherring away. Mouse curser would move, but no clicks recognised. Eventually, when the wherring stopped, I was able to open programs or connect to the internet etc. but only after waiting 3 or 4 minutes. I also noticed the computer was generally sluggish.

After a few days, I decided enough was enough and decided to do a fresh install of Windows XP. Took me ages to back-up all my files, and then reinstall XP and load the various drivers. In my rush to see if there was an improvement, I didn't bother to reinstall the HP software.

All was well. the computer was back to normal, taking just 90 secs to boot-up and ready to go, and not acting sluggishly. Then a week later I needed the printer, installed the HP software, and then back to square one!! All the original problems returned.

After researching the internet, HP software seems to be a hit and miss affair, putting it mildly (and not just with this model! ) so I returned the unit and got a refund. Pity really, because the only printer I've used at home was an HP inkjet that has worked perfectly for over 9 years, but as I can no longer trust their software, will be buying elsewhere.

Ironic, because the computer I use, which I've never had any problems with, is a HP Pavillion with an AMD dual core processor.

    Hope this all helps.

In hardware terms, this is a great little printer however, there are some MAJOR problems that can occur when you try to install the HP Deskjet F4280's software. Think twice about buying it if you are running anything less recent than vista, if you have an old PC or if you don't have much room on your hard drive. (By the way, if you find that half way through the installation it starts asking for file paths to missing system files, just hit "cancel" and carry on installing if you can. Don't try and download the extra file online - it makes no difference.)

Another thing to be aware of is that installing the software will probably slow down your computer. You can minimize this my stopping it from loading when your computer starts, but even then it will likely be slower than it was.

A further issue is the sheer size of the software you are "recommended" to install. There's loads of it - and half of it will not be needed by the average user. If you buy the HP Deskjet F4280, when you pop the CD in you computer and you are asked what you want to install, I'd advise you not to choose the "recommended" installation settings but to choose the bits you need. (It's not difficult to do this and there are explanations of what each bit of software does, so that you can pick only what you need.)

Having said all that - I am very happy with the print quality of this printer, and its design and speed. It is also easy to unpack, load with paper and and switch on. The headache comes from installing it. On the other hand - some users don't experience any problems. (I also installed it on my brand new mac and it was done without problems in about 10 minutes.)

    In conclusion...

It installed easily and works well except:
    1. If I turn it off then I have to disconnect the USB and power leads to the printer, re-boot my Toshiba laptop (using Vista) in order to get the printer working again. That's a real pain, I just leave it permanently turned on.
    2. Scanning in grayscale with HP's software just doesn't work. You can get it to scan in grayscale through Picasa but if they supply software it should be tested and bug free.
    3. The standard black ink cartridge is good for 60 sheets and that's it. Fortunately you can buy the XL ones here on Amazon much more cheaply than you can buy the smaller ones in the supermarket. There don't seem to be any after-market cartridges out yet.
There are probably better buys out there particularly if you have a laptop.
