I write this just after I printed out the final draft of my dissertation for my degree. Beforehand I had been bombarded with horror stories about printers packing up, failing to print or even worse bringing down the computer hours before deadlines.
Not so with the Deskjet 5740, a relatively old model but one which takes up little space, sits on your desk until needed and prints. Even better if you're a Macintosh user, just plug it in and forget about it until you need it. In six months of printing essays, slides, posters, presentations, reports, you name it, I haven't had a single problem. Print quality is good on Normal and great on Best, photos look good for the price range of the printer, loading paper is easy, it doesn't jam or lock or anything like that, it just prints. Included utilities, when I've needed them, are easy to use, and they do the job. And the capacity of the otherwise expensive black cartridges really is great, I'm still half full!
The best printers are the ones that you don't even realize are there, until the day before an essay is due and you need something reliable. Kudos to HP - if you need something that can just print things when they need printing and you don't want to have to cross your fingers when you load the printer, look no further.
