HP's range of RPN calculators are legendary. None more so than the HP 12c. It's remained largely unchanged for over 25 years and it is still the most amazing quality ever. You will not find a more tactile and robust pocket calculator anywhere.

If you've never used a Reverse Polish Notation machine before, you don't know what you're missing. Not only is this entry method super fast and efficient (it saves on keystrokes compared to the more common algebraic entry method of most other calculators) but it's also more logical, especially obvious when entering problems that are written with multiple parentheses. Another benefit is that the HP12c can calculate date problems in either the UK's DDMMYYYY format or the US's MMDDYYYY format. It understands leap years too without you needing to worry about them!

You probably already know that this beast is programmable too. It has many built in routines for common financial problems but also a memory for 99 key entries in your program. Also, for flexibility, you can make instant use of the 10 registers (instead of a normal calculator's single memory function).

After a little time learning the basics of RPN, you'll never want a standard calculator again.

Really liked while it lasted. China made unit SN 4CY02.. quality does not meet my expectations. Display has 10 random dead pixels only after 2 years after purchase making the product unusable.

This has to be greatest ever calculator. I'm still using the one I was given in 1986, and it works perfectly.

The reverse polish notation takes a few minutes to learn, but makes the machine much more powerful (it also stops people asking to borrow it).

Ordered the HP12C to replace my HP10c scientific calculator, bought 26 years ago and which recently decided to expire. The 12C has the same quality key action, the same look and the same or better build quality. Best of all it retains the RPN key entry method which is a dream to operate but stops casual colleagues from borrowing it. May seem more expensive than other makes but it will outlast them five fold. Treat yourself!

The reason that I have to write a review is the fact that I had my first 12C for well over 25 years and that the 12C I bought in 2009 is dying on me after less than 6 years. A fine example of some redundant people trying to justify their job by tweaking a fantastic product. I am buying now a 12C platinum as I can see from recent reviews that I am not the only one with these sort of problems.
What is wrong? The four and six on the keypad stopped working. From the start this 12C did NOT had the same feel as my first one.

Build quality of this product has gone down a lot since I first started buying them many years ago - I must be on my fifth or sixth one now. Current model has keys which stick, and it constantly throws up error messages when switching between functions/doing anything other than adding up. Once this one goes in the bin I won't be getting another one, so it's goodbye RPN!
