Before I go any further, I should point out that this method requires a USB cable for the duration of the installation and that none is supplied with the printer. I already had one from my old HP scanner but Amazon sells them for less than a pound, a small price to pay for convenience and peace of mind. The type required is A to B and the length only needs to be sufficient to stretch between the rear left of the printer and the computer.
The procedure is very simple: attach the printer to the computer using the USB cable, download the Printer Installation Wizard and run it. It will be necessary to follow some instructions on the front panel of the printer later, but the instructions on the computer screen should be followed first. It is only necessary to specify the type of installation required; the wizard automatically detects the hardware, downloads the software and configures the settings.
My experience was that everything went smoothly; both the test print and test scan worked first time and, once instructed to remove the USB cable, the wireless connection worked perfectly. I even switched the printer off and back on and the wireless connection continued to work.Read more ›
Firstly, the box it comes delivered in is huge. This is mainly due to the packing required for transport - however, the printer itself is quite large also. If you want a compact/ unobtrusive MFC, this may not be ideal. Having said that, the printer was easy to set up on our wireless network. We have macs also, and the set up was simple.
So far, we have only used it a little bit. The colours are pretty good, considering we printed on cheap photocopy paper. The speed of printing is excellent - actually faster than our old Samsung monojet laser.
Just beware that the size of paper that there is no manual feed function to accommodate different sizes of paper. You can put different sized paper in the tray at the bottom, but there is no slot for you to manually feed irregular sized paper into. If you want this feature, you need to buy the model above.
Overall, this printer has been fine for our everyday basic needs. Good value.
This one doesn't! It says it does full duplex but it will only work if you print a document from the computer. It won't do duplex as a standalone unit.
A backward step. HP were really unhelpful: they told us first that it could do it but we had to get the details from the internet, then they admitted that this model could not.
Note: if you want a printer that can photocopy from a two sided document and can scan from a two-sided document then go for HP 8500A PLUS - the 'plus' bit is important. We have now got one of these and it is doing everything that we want.
When looking at the spec watch out for 'two sided printing' vs 'two-sided printing and copying'.
And as for Amazon.co.uk's response: fantastic: five stars: easiest return I have every made; money refunded withint three days. Very good service from Amazon indeed.
So to prevent WW3 breaking out every other night I decided to look at what printers where available to do the following. Print from any Apple device, iPad - iPhone, iPod, any laptop or PC (XP,W7,Mac) in the house. Also the ability to copy and scan to a folder on the network (Mac or PC) ability to print in colour in duplex, print from anywhere from anything even over the web away from the home, not cost a fortune, must have independent ink cartridges not those rip off 3-1 cartridges. Hold enough paper to last at least a month and switch off into low power mode when it's not in use to save electricity.
The old printer was connected to the main PC via USB and was a pain to set up for the users so I started looking for networked printers with the "AIR" print function.Read more ›
