Product Description

AAt the edge of the Judaean Desert, bandits are menacing the stability of the kingdom of Herod the Great. Alarmed at the unsteadiness of its aging ally and the threat to the security of its gateway to the East, Rome dispatches Tribune Ulpius Crus and a single cohort of the Twenty-fifth Legion to the Judaean wasteland. The tribune asks Centurion Quintus Flavius Rufio to lead the cohort with him to Judaea to establish a temporary Roman presence as a deterrent near the edge of the Salt Sea. Veteran of eastern campaigns, Rufio recognizes that the threat of bandits is an illusion and that Rome faces a far superior danger. He must quickly train his foot soldiers to take to the saddle, for now they challenge a brilliant commander leading a force of the finest horsemen on earth. On the outcome of this confrontation depend the existence of Judaea and the credibility and primacy of Rome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling read 26 July 2012

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone whether this is your preferred genre or not.

Altimari has a very readable style. The book is character driven although there is a reasonable but simple story line.

The historical detail is accurate and plentiful, managing to conjure up the era but in a contemporary way.

I have read another book in this series which is just as good. Also a book called Apacheria which has a very similar central character only he is a US Cavalry Officer in the time of the Apache wars rather than a Roman Centurion.

All his books are very positive about soldiers and their noble qualities which you may or may not be sympathetic to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rufio rides into the Judean Desert . . . . 4 Dec 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
William Altimari has created a stirring and riveting novel. So much so, that I've lost lots of sleep time over several nights thru reading Horses on the Storm. The novel is fast paced and multi layered. I've got this on my iPad and will be reading this war novel again.
With a delicate hand, Altimari has created an exiting novel where the reader can exercise all the senses brought alive thru words. Not only that, the dialogue and banter is as it would be in a tight knit military unit. Well worth the price.
I can only hope that Mr Altimari does not allow Centurion Rufio, Flavia , et al to hang up their weapons in Gaul. No doubt there are prequels and sequels hovering out there . . . . But please, no more mythical creatures . . . Centaurs. . . . really ?

Good read, follows on nicely from the Legion and is just the type of book to while away the hours on a commuter train

4.0 out of 5 stars Horses on the storm 10 Sep 2012

Horses on the storm is a well written book but lacks the excitement of his book Legion which was full of action throughout.I expected similar so was a little disapointed but there is no denying the excellent research for this novel and Altimari is an author whose name I will be looking out for.

A good read, not quite up to the standard of Legio, but very enjoyable nevertheless.
