Product Description

Product Description

During the Napoleonic War era, Captain John Phillips, RN takes command of the frigate HMS Resolve. His son Timothy now serving beside him as a midshipman, he is handicapped by his latest marital difficulties. The orders for his new mission take him from his problems at home and send him to the Mediterranean where he must deliver a consignment of gold and silver coin. After battling pirates and corrupt officials, he, his ship and crew are successful.

Returning to the Atlantic, off the coast of Portugal, he and his son battle French naval forces. Later, he is sent to the Caribbean where pirates are causing havoc with British trade. His fortunes on the mend (at least temporarily) with his wife, he receives an audience with King George III in recognition with his naval successes.

The John Phillips stories are exciting and good to read but Richars Testrake's compass is adrift - he needs to understand east from west. Also his knowledge of the Navy, boats and procedure could do with a massive overhaul, especially the historical facts and terminology. However, a good read if you ignore the typos and the missing and misspelt words!

For me this story did not 'flow' far too much emphasis on juggling crews about for maning prizes.

5.0 out of 5 stars "HMS Resolve" Keeps CAPT John Phillips' Good Standing Alive 29 Nov 2014

Richard Testrake has fast become one of my favorite early 19th century era British Navy authors. He researches well the era and provides a reasonable representation of events using a fictional set of characters from history that he interjects into historic events. The best parts, in my humble opinion, are the issues of actual activities before the mast. He expresses himself well and while the never ending problems exist with typos going from book to Kindle, it can be overlooked due to the minimal number in this book. I chose this book for my Kindle and find the re-typed versions vary from author/publisher to author/publisher. These are much fewer in this book, it seems. Great job Mr. Testrake. I am now into another John Phillips novel. My only wish was that since both HMS Dreadnaught and HMS Resolve were published in 2014, it would have been nice to have them either together as one book or at least sequenced with reference to events or time.

I enjoyed the book, which in my opinion, was more realistic than the Midshipman Rundell book. I still think that the prizes taken by John, were won with little damage to crew & the ship. In reality the French were better seamen than were depicted, however this did change when Napoleon was drafting the dregs of French manhood in the latter stages of Napoleon's reign.

I'm glad that I live in this century. The conditions in which these seamen lived below decks, were terrible. Just imagine being pressed into service & not seeing your family for years! The pressed seamen were confined to the ship, even when in port, for fear that they may run! The food was gross & the water in the barrel after a few months, was gaining solidity!

Capt. Phillips is creative and decisive in carrying out the wishes of the Sitting Sea Lords of the Admiralty. Tactics and points of sail are quite well illustrated. Plot lines are consistant and in concert with the history of the period. Enjoyed the flow of the story line and picked up a fact or two in the process. Will look for the follow-on to this one.

Reads like an outline for an O'Brien novel, or perhaps a report to the Admiralty.. No character development, no detail, and no emotion. It is a bland, rapid read.
