white soul 22 April 2002
By A Customer
My favourite thing about 60 ft Dolls was always Richard Parfitt's voice- always thought, even though the band were pretty punky, he was one of the great white soul singers, up there with Dusty and Rod. His songwriting skills blossom here, suggesting a Welsh Springsteen (is there really such a difference between Newport and New Jersey)? This record is going to save a lot of souls.

It's impossible not to be completely swept along by Parfitts' wholly romantic album: he's managed to distill folk:country:and even punk rock into ten diamond songs with tender and moving lyrics that resonate long after you've switched off your CD player. My own personal highlights
were "summergliding" a dreamy love song which totally transported me away into Parfitts' world... "what we talk about" a fabulous rocker with Steely Dan horn section. The title track "highlights in slow motion" very Van Morrison, with great fragile vocals that never get too unbearably frail, in fact, the rawness of the vocals and lyrics are the backbone of the record. "wish i was with you" and "morning star" are also worth mentioning. I don't know much about Parfitts former group "60ft dolls" but as a solo performer, this is a convincing debut.

it starts with the beautiful and voyeuristic "downtown" a haunting lyric that sweeps across a melodic landscape that conjures up images of late night streelife as viewed by 'the outsider' in fact 'the outsider theme' seems to set pretty much the vibe for most of the album, the first track ends as it cross fades into the second "stone honey" a sort of Springsteen meets Marvin Gaye rocker with an ambiguous drug/sex lyric. Things get more interesting with the next track " Summergliding" a minimalist masterpiece of just guitar, vocal and cello: this song really does evoke the summer romance of long gone teenage years. "highlights in slow motion" starts with a bunch of feedback and garage punk drumming until about a minute in where it implodes and changes key metamorphosing into a gospel/acousticrock hymn, rather like van morrison meets mott the hoople. "what we talk about" is a rip roaring soul/country rocker complete with total horns, on first listen this tyrack is the most immediate and will have you bouncing arouind the room playing ait ghuyitar. "wish i was with you" reminded me of stoner pink floyd, by the end of this song you're completely seduced by the tinkjly keyboard loop that relentlessy bores it's way into your brain. "let love in" an Alt country song with a wicked neil young type guitar solo. "morning star" is much the same with a velvet vocal and nice falsetto. "freckles of gold" a simple country song that works because it's so unpretentious. and the last track on the album is the Lo Fi "i took that woman home last night" acruel lyric wrtapped around an electric piano which gets rudely spliced in half by a maniacal guitar solo. Great stuff, one of those albums that grows on you, and with you, and before you know it becomes an integral part of your collection.
