This was the first John Hiatt album I ever purchased - and I've gone on to buy virtually everything he's done since this! Some great songs and terrific back-up work from Sonny Landreth and the Goners. This album also introduced me to the magnificent slide guitar playing of Sonny Landreth - once I'd read the cover and realised that it wasn't Ry Cooder (who played on its predecessor, 'Bring The Family')...
If you like John Hiatt then you've already got this. If you haven't heard him, then this is a good a place as anywhere to start. If you like good songs, good tunes and slide guitar then this should press your buttons... and if you have any doubts, just cue up 'Tennessee Plates' and have them dismissed!

John Hiatt's 1987 album "Bring The Family" is without question his best ever, not least because he was able to work with his dream band (Ry Cooder, Jim Keltner and Nick Lowe). But this 1989 follow-up is close to matching it.
"Slow Turning" is Hiatt's first collaboration with Louisiana trio The Goners (including slide guitarist Sonny Landreth).
The arrangements are variously acoustic and electric, and several guest stars pop up: Former Eagles guitarist Bernie Leadon plays his National resonator guitar, then-session vocalist Ashley Cleveland and Dennis Locorriere of Dr Hook contributes backing vocals, and the Amazing Rhythm Aces' James Hooker sits in on organ.
Highlights include the tough rockers "Paper Thin" and "Tennessee Plates", the resigned, unsentimental ballad "Icy Blue Heart", the country-rock shuffle "Sometime Other Than Now", the tender love song "Feels Like Rain", and the fine title track.
Not eeverything may be equally memorable, sure, but there is really not a single weak track on this fine slice of mature rock n' roll music, and it is among the two or three best things John Hiatt ever released.
Highly recommended.

I have only 'Bring the Family' and 'Little Village', and on a friends recommendation I bought this too. Glad I did. Some absolutely classic JH tracks and a couple of gems. I have always like his somewhat dark writing style.
