'A big book in every sense', 1 Sep 2005
This review is from: HEAVENLY WISDOM PB (Welwyn Commentary Series) (Paperback)
At any stage in our Christian lives we may become aware of our lack of wisdom and are therefore profoundly grateful to God that he has promised to supply that need. One way in which God does this is to lead us to the book of Proverbs - a book packed full of practical guidance for life.
But we need help to read, study and rightly apply the instruction it contains - which should make us thankful to God for Gary Brady's commentary.
This is a big book in every sense and it will prove immensely valuable to preachers seeking to expound Proverbs. However, all who wish to be directed by heavenly wisdom will find this treatment highly accessible - the book is indeed 'Proverbs simply explained'.
The careful structure of Proverbs is brought out in the two main sections. The first section is referred to as the 'grammar' - the ten fatherly talks in the early chapters. This then leads on to the 'vocabulary' - the collection of sayings that form the bulk of the book. These appear at first sight to be somewhat random, but are shown to be thoughtfully designed to sustain the reader's interest.
Many current allusions and illustrations are brought into play to show the relevance of this divine wisdom to our modern days.
Application is very much in view in this treatment. Along the way, in the study of chapters 8 and 9 where Wisdom itself speaks, the author fulfils the avowed intention, stated in his introduction, 'to trace the verses, as far as is possible, back to our Saviour Christ'.
This has not always been the case in modern commentaries on Proverbs, so for that (among much else) this reviewer is grateful to Gary Brady.
This book is a good example of how to handle and profit from the wisdom literature of the Old Testament, and ought to be widely used.
