Nick Harper - Harperspace

Amazon.co.uk

As Julian Lennon points out, having a famous rocker as a father is probably more a curse than a blessing for the aspiring musician. It's a good thing then that in Harperspace Nick Harper doesn't sound much like his folk-rocky papa at all. In fact, lad outclasses dad in many respects. As a vocalist, for starters, young Nick boasts a much more flexible voice than papa and, as a guitarist, he keeps his playing rather more structured and to the point. He also integrates acoustic, electric and electronic elements with considerable aplomb, and frequently glides into curiously avant-garde areas without ever detracting from the essential singability of his songs. Indeed, if a line could be drawn between David Gray and Robbie Williams, Mr Harper would be balanced somewhere near the middle, and he'd make a killer opening act for Gomez. If he can just keep selling enough CDs to be allowed to make the next one, Nick Harper should be around for a long time to come. --Johnny Black

One of the best guitarists/songwriters I have ever heard and possibly my favourite musician ever - when you hear this CD, you will find it hard to believe that he is even better live. A must-buy album from an artist who should be massive by now if there were any justice in the world. And go see him live when you can - he's amazing.

Picked this Cd up recently in Manchester whilst out with a special lady. Having followed Nick for some time and occasionally managing to see him live I really wanted the guy to pull my guts out and teach me more to life. After Smithereens which was a little disappointing for my taste (I'm not into the band backing you Nick!) the album was a little hard to get used to at first but then the gems really hit you in the face, "Before they Put me in the Ground" is a great song, gut wrenching lyrics and a sweet song which touches a real nerve - it did it for me Nick. Probably one of the best albums yet, keep em' coming Nick.

I have listened to Nick's music and experienced a wide range of emotions as this musician has the ability to touch your soul with his wide range of excellent music. Moving and inspiring the album should not be missed and if Harper comes your way on tour make sure you get there! His performance on the acoustic stage at Glastonbury '99 was the first time I had seen him play live and I was bowled over by the talent and incredible music.
