I rarely write reviews on Amazon but feel compelled to write on here to deter potential buyers off buying this product. I bought the X5 in July last year and after a 3 months the mop stopped working and so we sent it back to Thane. Thane sent a replacement and 4 months after the replacement stopped working. Rang Thane who told me to perform some "special" techniques to fix the product, didn't work. Rang back and they told me of some further "special" techniques to fix the product, didn't work.

I was fed up so asked for a refund, they told me I could not get a refund because I had had the product for over 7 months, even though I pointed out that actually I had'nt had one single steam mop for longer than 4 months. This fell on deaf ears and they outright refused to refund me. We are now on the second replacement with no extended warranty.

We are now waiting for this mop to fail before we bin it and get a different make.

Please don't waste your money on this product, it is poorly designed, unreliable and will cause no end of aggravation.

This mop is not good quality. It was bought for me as a gift - as I had wanted one for ages following all the 'amazing' adverts for this mop. Within 9 months the handle had snapped off, and I had to pay for a replacement due to not having the receipt. I have now had the mop for just over a year and it is un-useable - last week the water tank started emptying itself all over the floor following use - this week it kept tripping the electric off. My husband (who is an engineer) unscrewed the back of the unit to find that the plastic back of the tank was cracked all around its mountings - this meant that the water was escaping out of the tank and getting into the electrical wiring! This appears to be a major design flaw as cracks are also starting to form around the upper mounting screws as well.
Very poor quality product considering all of the hype about this mop!! DO NOT BUY unless you want to waste your hard earned cash.......

Works well, but badly designed. It doesn't want to stand up - keeps falling over if left to its own devices!

Bought as a gift. Used once then stopped working. Thane Direct claims the problem is limescale deposits from water, but I live in an area where we don't have limescale deposits (what comes out of our taps is sold as bottled water in other parts of the country) certainly not enough to clog up a device after so little use. The design is also very clumsy to use when hand held and needs some kind of shoulder strap or additional handle nearer to the centre of gravity of the device. Of course, blaming the water conveniently shifts responsibility from the manufacturer to the consumer and I wonder how many of the postings on the internet about how people repaired their device by using vinegar to clean the nozzles are actually posted by employees of the manufacturer. The language used often seems suspiciously similar. I feel really guilty about this now and will have to buy another gift. This will be going in the bin.
addendum:
Perhaps I over reacted a little in anger with my earlier post about the steam mop. It will still be going in the bin, but now I have had to time to think about it I realise I was partly to blame by allowing myself to be taken in and fooled by a TV advert.

It's true that the mop can be restored to normal function by leaving white vinegar in the tank overnight, but I wonder how many people would have bought it if they had known they would have to do that almost every time they use it. I suppose, in the end I lost my temper at realising how easily I had been conned by the video presentation. Nowhere does it mention "Only use with distilled water".

But I had also got very frustrated with the limitations of the mop's extremely poor design. If you watch the advert carefully you will notice he never cleans anything above waist height.

Unbelievably disappointed I bought this product. Having first seen it on TV I debated for 8 months whether to get one or not. The last thing I wanted was a hundred pounds of useless 'toy' sitting in a cupboard. I read all the reviews on the Thane website, saw the Which recommendation, asked friends who have (other brands of) steam cleaners, got some money as a present from my mother and finally decided it would be worth it and sent for it. I have a lot of wooden and tiled floors and 4 dogs so thought it would help me a great deal. It is exactly as I thought, a complete waste of money. Perhaps it is the best of its kind (I doubt it) but it does my floors no favours - leaves my wooden floors looking dull and quite frankly is totally useless on tiles or grout. When you try to use the hand held steamer (I was doing my cooker hood and other greased up bits in the kitchen) the main problem is it pours hot water either down your arm or all over the work surface and what's more it doesn't cut through the grease. Whenever you use it you have to have a dry wiping cloth in the other hand which actually does more of the cleaning than this highly priced useless piece of kit. The only good thing I would say is it's easy to manoeuvre and less hassle than a mop - but that's all it is, a mop, which saves having a bucket around. As for carpets, don't even waste your time, does nothing. Mine at least still works unlike the comments on other people's reviews but by the time I got the hang of it, convinced myself it wasn't me being stupid and using it incorrectly, decided it needed to go back, guess what - it was out of the 7 day return period. Really gutted, the idea of having a steam cleaner really appealed to me, just wish it did what it says on the tin.
