Book Description

A pathogen of unknown origin has spread rapidly around the world, infecting all living humans and animals, and killing off all insect life. Only plant life seem to be resistant. The infected do not die, however, but instead begin to mutate into horrendous creatures, gaining plant-like qualities and even melding with one another to create monstrosities of nightmare proportions.

Only a handful are immune, and these survivors cling desperately to life, searching for food, fresh water, and a means of escape, find rescue, and discover a way to rebuild.

Becky is a young woman, taking refuge in her flat in the southern English city of Brighton, along with her friend Abby, an Australian woman she met online.

Harry is a member of the Posse, a group of five men enjoying the anarchy of the United Kingdom, smashing and grabbing what they can to survive, caring little for whom they harm along the way.

Brad and his dog Sam are searching Oxford for Brad's finance, Anne, battling their way to Christ Church College.

Paths will cross, more lives will be lost and destroyed, and the world will give way to its new host.

More About the Author

Stephen Sweeney was born in Brighton, UK in 1977 to Terry and Emma Sweeney and has spent many years thereafter making up stories about stuff that doesn't exist.

He attended Worth School in West Sussex before studying Environmental Biology at Oxford Brookes University.

He currently lives in London where he works in the City performing various IT related bits and pieces (although he's worse than useless if you ask him to help fix your computer).

When not working he enjoys listening to music, reading, snowboarding (or at least attempting to) and spending time with friends (generally talking nonsense to them in the pub).

His favourite authors include JK Rowling, Terry Pratchett, Philip Pullman, Iain Banks and Stephen King (although he doesn't read too much King any more since he's too scared of finding an old decaying dead woman lying in his bathtub, grinning at him).

5.0 out of 5 stars Apocalypse with a difference 9 Nov. 2013

Took a while to really get into this book but well worth it. The characters are great, especially Becky & Abby. A real different take on the usual 'end of the world' story. Will definitely try some of the authors other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best of humanity and the worst 2 July 2014
By Andrew
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One of the most innovative stories I have read in many years. It includes an almost beginning-of-the-end of the world type scenario, zombies - of a sort, loss and pain, thrills and horror, the best of humanity and the worst.

The sign of a good book is when it stays with you long after you've read it. It's been many months, but I still have an unhealthy fear of vines.

A must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern day 'Day of the Triffids' 2 April 2014
By Wendy
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Just finished reading this and wow what a brilliant book. An easy book to read set in and around the south of England. Survivors hear a radio broadcast that if they make it to Portsmouth they will be rescued but there trip down there is far from easy. Groups of people starting the trip by the end only a single survivor makes it. Loved the story with Brad and Sam and how they found Anne but a very sad ending. A thriller/horror at its best well worth reading.
