The documentary director David N. Jahn started working as an assistant at Giger's atelier in Zürich in 2000. After he returned back to Prague, Jahn offered Giger to produce a DVD that would map his work and current life. The shooting took place at Giger's studio in Zürich and in Gruyéres where the H.R. Giger Museum and bar are located. In Vienna, they managed to film an interview with the Austrian fantastic artist Ernst Fuchs. In New York, the film-makers encountered Debbie Harry (Blondie) for whom Giger produced an album cover and two music videos. At the vernissages in Paris and Prague, they recorded an array of interviews with other personalities of the artistic and cultural world that also appear in the film. Even though the authors don't avoid the particular developmental periods of Giger's work, the main purpose was not to create the artist's biography. In this case, it is more likely considered to be an authentic perspective on the peculiar world of this Swiss artist.
The second part of the H.R. Giger DVD - Art in Motion - is a real adventure for all Giger fans. All those who have met Giger's art in books or at exhibitions know what we are talking about. Surrealistic paintings often hide dimensions which the viewer becomes aware of after a while and sometimes very unexpectedly. It is the first time you will be able to see Giger's paintings processed digitally in high resolution quality, 3D animated and together with original film music and surround sound. Watch ten moving image collages (including Erotomechanics) where we used over 200 diapositives which cover the most important periods of his work. Each of those collages will be presented in an abstract story, which will tell us more about Giger´s life and artistic work.

Art In Motion:
The main film is an epic, sprawling journey through some of HR Giger's greatest pieces as you won't have seen them before. Each one's been digitally scanned and processed then transformed into 3D images that twitch and twist across the screen. The film takes time across each multi-layered painting which come to life with cyber sorcery. The soundtrack is also as haunting as you would expect from a Giger dvd, with soothing ambient electro-wierdness similar to Tangerine Dream, which is later followed by a heavier and darker music score, both industrial and claustrophobic, kind of like a TOOL music video, unsettling yet compelling. Strange noises send chills up your spine as if from the images themselves.
Extras:
Further insights into the mind of HR Giger, including interviews and documentaries. Short films from earlier in his career including the gem; Sex, Drugs and Giger, a brief but very intense mind trip, featuring some of his most famous works in fluid motion, to another warped psychedelic sound track. Also includes Walking With Giger, which follows the man as he copes with constant night terrors and the fights against the Pretty Art Scene. Plus original short films directed and filmed by Giger also crop up on the disc.
To sum up; this dvd is a must-have for all Giger fans, as it is the ultimate source of reference for his visual artwork. It contains the main feature, two featurettes and a documetary about Giger, five short films, including previously unseen animation from the man himself and a bonus interview with Stanislav Grof but you have to find it!

i've been a HUGE fan of H.R.Giger since the 5th grade when me and my best friend snuk in to see "Alien" after being refused tickets by the box office attendant for not having an adult accompany us.. so we bought "herbie the love bug" tickets (next to the alien screen room) and watched alien instead lol.
I love this DVD! after having watched it,(someday when i can afford to) i would very much like to visit his museum and bar someday to see his beautiful artwork in person, its been my dream since childhood .

It's a wonderful and rare candid look into the life and work of giger, the father of biomechanics. The animated painting are great and trippy, adding depth to his dark landscapes. It shows his studio, and daily life, a glimpse or the giger bar and "fun" park.
I've been an avid fan for 20 years, and I had no idea how old some of the paintings and sculptures are(guess I should've paid more attention in the books and my prints.)
I have a half sleeve giger tattoo and plan on several more, much of my other work is bio mechanical as well. It's wonderful to hear some of his influences, Nd see what his personality is like, its not what you'd expect.
Amazon has a great package with a second giger DVD for cheap paired with this one, sadly I'm a busy man and have not watched the second DVD yet.
Get the DVD, its even great to put on during parties, just as background eyecandy.
