Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

H.M.S. Fable is an album that seemed to fall out of a clear blue sky. It seemed astonishing to learn that Shack were still going--though they'd surfaced briefly in 1995, they were widely assumed to have completely disappeared sometime in the dying days of the 1980s. After a few plays of H.M.S. Fable, it seemed more astonishing still that everyone had forgotten what they were capable of. Shack, who appeared doomed to skulk through posterity as one of those ghostly never-were bands that are more talked about than listened to, had ignored the script. H.M.S. Fable commanded, and was granted, centre stage. Of course, it probably helped matters for the elusive Liverpudlians that Oasis had become the biggest band in Britain pretty much by doing Shack's act, though not quite as well. If H.M.S. Fable is any one thing, it's the album Oasis like to think they've been making. Shack lift from the same sources (the Beatles, mostly) but have the wit to do more than just giving the heisted riffs a quick respray before selling them on. Shack have taken it apart and put it together again in a way that suits them: in terms of pop guitar balladry, this album reinvents the wheel. That Michael Head sings like an angel with a hangover doesn't hurt. --Andrew Mueller

5.0 out of 5 stars The album of 1999 1 Feb 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
From a year that was generally devoid of anything worth buying, HMS Fable shines out as an example of guitar pop craftsmanship at its best. The songs draw heavily on Michael Head's dark, drug-addled past, from which he has dredged up some of the most uplifting and affecting pop music written this decade. This is the album of 1999, bar none. All the plaudits it's been given are deserved. Drop everything and buy it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS NOW! 22 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I like to think that I am up with what's new in music, yet the first time I heard of Shack was when their latest album HMS Fable was voted fifth best album in the Select end-of-year review. It proceeded to appear in the top five also in the NME and Uncut magazine. On that basis, I went out and bought it. It surpassed even my expectations based on the reviews. It is quite easily the best album of last year, with no track being anything short of excellent. The last track 'Daniella' is so beautiful, it makes you want to cry every time you hear it. The sheer emotion this album provokes is testament to its brilliance. I advise anyone who appreciates music to buy this album. It may take a few listens to get into, but once you do, you won't stop playing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars the album Cast and the la's have always promised 17 May 2000
Format:Audio CD
Like many I got on the Shack bandwagon after a couple of reviews, one suggesting that this was the sound that the La's would play if they were around today. I wasn't disapointed. HMS Fable is blessed with raw emotion. Comedy is a modern day classic. Daniella - one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. Shack continue in the great tradition of 90's Liverpool pop. Check out the Real People, the grounbreaking La's album, or even the much maligned Cast.
