Product Description

A life lived on the road and a heart that will always belong there

Imagine being born into a world where communities are constantly on the move, but freedom is not a birthright.

Rosie grew up travelling all over England and Ireland in her family's caravan. She had an idyllic childhood roaming fields and meadows with her younger brothers and sisters - free from the trappings of modern life, but restricted by the expectations of her culture.

When Rosie was 14, the family's happiness was shattered when her grandfather - who was loved and respected by the whole community - was killed in a tragic accident.

Suddenly everything in Rosie's life unravelled and she was forced to abandon the traditional way of life she loved. Her family fell apart in grief and Rosie tried her best to take care of her younger siblings and hold the family together.

Eventually though life at home became unbearable and Rosie met Stevie, a traveller boy who promised her a different kind of life. Sadly though, Stevie was battling his own demons and Rosie's journey to freedom had only just begun...

Firstly, I could not put this book down!
I loved reading it and enjoyed reading about her life as a traveller in her community whilst gaining an understanding of different types of travellers. This book explained more then what you see on the Channel 4 'Big fat gypsy weddings' programme (although I love that program too) for example, some traveller families believe that the girls family should pay a 'fortune' to her fiance's family which is a rather large lump sum of money!

Rosie, a brilliant writer explains to us her early life, her life as a teenager and her life as an adult with all family traditions, problems and beliefs included. I just wanted this book to go on forever as im so interested in the traveller community and how secretive they are. As most of us have seen on the gypsy wedding program, Rosie writes about expectations of a traveller wife (wife for life), the life of a traveller man (which some are more helpful to their wives then what we see on the program) and also how traveller children and adults alike grow up with little education, leaving some not able to read and write.

I think this is a brilliant book and believe it is quite interesting. Those interested in the traveller community, those who have seen the gypsy wedding program and even those who are neither I deffinately reccomend this book.

Excellent! 2 Aug 2011
Format:Hardcover
I loved this book.
Rosie Mckinley writes in such a way that you can imagine it all. It's written so easily and it's so thought provoking.
Rosie did not always have an easy time, but there are many parts that you can tell she absolutely loved. She talks so lovingly about her family, especially Ol'Daddy(her grandfather).
Cannot recommend highly enough! Enjoy!
