Product Description
Shot by legendary cinematographer Albert Maysles and directed by Jasmine Dellal, this dynamic musical documentary follows five Gypsy bands from four countries who unite for the Gypsy Caravan as they take their show around North America for a six-week tour, astounding every audience they meet. Their musical styles range from flamenco to brass band, Romanian violin to Indian folk. And with humour and soul in their voices, they celebrate the best in Gypsy culture and the diversity of the Romani people in an explosion of song and dance. As the film follows the amazing performances and behind-the-scenes action from the tour created by World Music Institute, we discover the real lives of these musicians. We visit Macedonia, Romania, India and Spain, meet their families and see what music brings to their lives. The tales of these characters are woven between their performances - allowing us to understand and celebrate Romani culture and the prejudice of their shared ancestry.

First of all the movie does an excellent job of portraying gypsy culture through the prism of music and follows five bands touring the US, as well as in their home environments. It is moving, it handles prejudice against gypsies, their passion for music as one of the few avenues into surpassing the prejudice and the music is moving and excellent.
What robbed it of the fifth star in my opinion is the low quality of the recorded music on the DVD. I imagine that the acoustics of live recording are never as good as in the studio but it was clearly a bit below par or what the movie and artists would have deserved. I woul still recommend it thoroughly to anyone enjoying the music, interested in gypsy culture or their history.
Finally, do not get fooled by the title image - the movie is not only about Fanfare Ciocarla but broader - consequently the music spans a much wider range than Balkan style brass music.

I have had this DVD for ages and only watched it last night and was blown away by most of it. It is a documentary about four Rom bands from different countries who are put together for a 6 week tour of the USA and Canada.
They are from Macedonia, India, Spain and Romania and whilst all have different sounds, they all have the same passion with intense emotions and explosions of musical depth of feeling.
They follow the bands on tour and also tell their often intimate stories from their homeland. The crushing poverty for a lot of them seems to be totally alleviated by the sheer joy in the music.
They all have a massive love of life which seems contagious and they all seem to smoke at every possible moment. There is a lovely interview with Jonny Depp who has worked with some of them in the past and just adores them.
I thought I was going to find this dull and preachy, it is neither, so why the 4 stars, well that is because I would have liked more of the music. There is not one entire song, which I know is the way documentaries are done, but it is so spellbinding I found it quite distracting, when I am getting taken up in the music and: they cut to an interview.
Still petty gripe aside I have been telling friends about this and now they are all asking to borrow it - I am of course advising them about the current great deals on Amazon! (That should stop unwanted emails.)

This is a very special DVD not only do you learn about the history of the Roma people you also see five gypsy bands as they tour America. The story and the music is just magic.I can fully understand why this film won a number of awards.
