The talented Jane Hawkins (Dreya Weber, Lovely & Amazing) was an impressive gymnast at the top of her game until a devastating injury ended her career. Now she pours the passion, strength and discipline that once fueled her sport into maintaining both a tedious job as a massage therapist and a loveless marriage. A chance meeting leads sets Jane on a new path: performing a CirqueDu Soleil style aerial act with a mysterious and beautiful dancer named Serena (Addie Yungmee). Each of them are illuminated by the presence of the other, but there are distractions. Jane is distressed by her lack of children while Serena is a closeted lesbian who tackles stereotypes with being an adopted Korean daughter of Jewish parents. As the stunning pair prepares to audition their act for a Las Vegas show, the gravitational pull between the two women becomes increasingly unavoidable... A visually compelling film that challenges notions of both ability and identity, THE GYMNAST is foremost a story about hope and taking the necessary risks to fully become yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars inspired 2 Dec 2007
An absolutely beautiful and breath-taking movie. Jane is a former Gymnast who is caught in a loveless marraige and seems rather lost in life. One day she meets Nicole who convinces her to try out an aerial act requiring skill and grace. Her partner in this act is Selena, a closeted lesbian. Even before Jane knows about this a bond and attraction is forms between the two women. There are several complicating factors, besides Jane's marraige!
With the backdrop of the gymnastic type stuff it's a bittersweet love story worthy of praise. I just don't understand why all the lesbian movies worth watching have what feel like 'in the air' endings. Probably my one and only gripe with the movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars A hidden gem! 5 Sep 2011
I bought this film out of pure curiosity and was pleased by the choice. It is a love story but based around two different women who share a common goal of putting together an aerial act for Las Vegas. They do all of their own stunts and still act their roles very well indeed. They are certainly not wooden. Worth watching.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sensual dance in mid-air 30 Oct 2007
If you like watching perfect well-trimmed bodies floating gracefully in air I recommend this film. Very scenic. The shots seem like pictures full of colour and hidden movement.
There's not much dialogue but it seemed fine. The emphasis is on these two bodies that interact in a sensual dance in mid-air and through it realise that love is just right there to be discovered and savoured.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this film! Loved this film! Loved this film! 18 April 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I've always loved Ms Weber as an actress since seeing her in the film "Everything's Relative". Her characters always come over as confident on the outside, but very vulnerable and loveable on the inside. This film is wonderful. She plays a woman who is in a marriage that really is a sham - he's a pig, and she seems to be just the little wifey. She is an injured gymnast, but keeps running and keeping fit, and working as a masseur. After going into her local gym she meets a woman who has an idea for aerial acrobatic act with another woman, and they hit it off immediately. The growth of love and attraction between these two women was lovely, and the aerial act when they performed it was breathtaking. Is there a happy ending? Watch it and find out.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Gymnast 24 Sep 2011

Very watchable and based around the kind of stuff that Dreya Weber performs for the likes of Pink / Cher / Madonna etc. Well worth a watch. In fact I'm going to watch it again as I enjoyed so much!

A love story of two women,(one married and straight, one lesbian), who meet each other due to a Gymnastic Teacher combining the art of choreography, strength and gymnastics.

I think I've watched this dvd 3 or 4 times now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspired 19 May 2011
The Gymnast is a inspired film, missing most of the cliches that many gay films feel they need to rely these days. What is left is a intoxicating film that is beautifully subtle in its intentions, even in the closing credits.

Story line was okay. Not sure on the actresses not much chemistry between them. Okay film to add to your collection but there are better films out there in this genre.
