Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

It's said that death is the great leveller, but in the music industry, often the precise opposite is true. Posthumously released recordings are all too often infused with an uncomfortable poignancy, or worse still, a sense of ghoulish fascination--a morbid legacy that crushes the actual content under its tragic symbolic weight. Al Brooker, Gwei-Lo's guitarist, died unexpectedly onstage a mere month before the release of this, the Cambridge-based instrumental avant-rock quartet's debut album. But while his presence casts a dark shadow across these seven slender tracks of melancholic instrumental post-rock, by no means does it render the contents mere epitaph. No, Gwei-Lo is worth more than that; the likes of "U.R.R" and "Cellsong" envisage kindred spirits Mogwai, or the fastidiously applied structure of US avant-rock forefathers Shellac--all cyclical rhythms, spasmodic-yet-logical tempo changes, violent bursts of noise and sombre washes of ambient lull. Perhaps it's this solemn tone that allows Gwei-Lo to carry its burden. Or perhaps it's just that there is enough content here--between the hypnotic cyclical grooves, behind the murky, drifting smokescreens--to appreciate this album for the accomplished work that it is. --Louis Pattison

I purchased this based on the strength of Annoy (the 4th track - available for download from bellaunion.com) ... I have not been dissapointed. Gwei-Lo delivers exactly what it promises - intriguing instrumental, multi-layers intertwining to produce an atmosphere that is greater than the sum of its parts. For those who cannot get enough of GSYBE's spectacular instrumental recordings, they could do a lot worse than giving this a try (particularly at this bargain price). On a sad note, however, Gwei-Lo's guitarist died on stage in June 2000 - consequently this may be their only recording - but at least it is a great note to start and end on.
This is the first CD in Bella Unions "7 series" ... If the rest can live up to this - then modern instrumental music has been made far richer.

Good Mogwai (after Mogwai) 30 April 2001
By Brian Gettler - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This disc is a fine effort from a band known more for the death of band member Al Brooker on stage at a festival in Cambridge (UK) than for the music it has produced. That's really a shame. Gwei-Lo were a "post-rock" (as if rock no longer existed) hailing from England whose music was profoundly informed by fellow countrymen (Britain, not England, that is) Mogwai - specifically Mogwai's early work (see the singles compilation Ten Rapid). Gwei-Lo is a competent, though not ground-breaking first (and, unfortunately, most likely last) offering.
still great years after Al left us 20 Jan 2004

When Bella Union offered its website visitors a chance to download the song Annoy from Gwei-lo's then forthcoming debut album, the buzz was on this young ensemble and their demo that hooked musical gurus Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymonde on its first listen. I too was hooked and for months eagerly awaited the cd's release.
Then news of Al's tragic death came and I was just as devastated as Gwei-lo's loyal fans. But to be honest with you, it wasn't the tragedy that made me buy this cd, it was the music. Here is a fresh production, completely instrumental and as skillful as it is unique.
Gwei-lo's debut was also the debut of Bella Union's Series 7 (seven songs each by seven artists). If only there were more than seven songs! My favorites include Cellsong, Annoy, and Corona. The songs have a definite flow and symmetry to them that I find more dynamic than other comparable bands.
Buy this cd and you won't be disappointed. But promise me you'll buy it not just for Al but for the spirit of musicians who play for the love of good music.
collect it before it's collectible 1 Feb 2007

With touchstones ranging from Mogwai to Tristeza, Gwei Lo's lone release should not be permitted to sink into obscurity. It's truly great instrumental "post" rock (a term that always conjures up Tortoise for me... another band that Gwei Lo's sound references). If your listening inclinations lead you toward any of these bands, or towards Godspeed You Black Emperor or Japancakes, you will very likely enjoy Gwei Lo.

Post-rock Perfection 2 Dec 2000
By R. david Cole - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is the first in a series of seven albums from different bands being put out by Bella Union. A label run by Ex-members of The Cocktau(sp?) Twins. It is also the only thing they'll ever put out as their main guitarist died of a heart attack recently. The music is all instrumental with a lot of drastic dynamic changes. They take all the style and moodyness of your favorite late 80's European "alternative" bands like the Cure (a la Desintigration) and apply that aesthetic to the Post-rock movement. God that sounded pretensious. The resulting music is beautiful and often quite moving. If you are at all into bands like Godspeed You Black Emperor, Tristeza, American Football, etc. Get this! You won't be sorry.
