About the Author

Josh Sutton is a freelance writer specialising in camping cuisine. He writes for various publications including the Guardian, Yorkshire Post, Camping Magazine and Green Parent Magazine and runs the popular camping recipe website www.guyropegourmet.com. He also hosts the country's first ever tent-based supper club and is a veteran of numerous food and music festivals, where he can often be seen demonstrating the art of cooking outdoors or playing his ukulele. Josh lives in Yorkshire with his wife and two children, who happily test and approve all of Josh's new recipes.

My idea of camping is to load-up the panniers and rucksack and set off on my bike for a weekend with like-minded souls. We're lucky if we take ANY cooking equipment with us, instead, we stock-up with pre-prepared food and/or bought sandwiches, pork pies, packets of crisps, and so on.

The author of this enlightening volume, Josh Sutton, has a different concept of camping and cuisine, however. He appears to enjoy taking his Volkswagon camper van, erecting an awning of some kind and cooking the kind of meals that would have a gourmet salivating.

Some of the dishes in the volume are eminently sensible - some salads and soups, for example, but others seem, to say the least, a bit impractical if you're cooking outside. Indeed, one of the recipes I came across has 23 separate ingredients! A repast fit for any dinner party you would have thought, let alone around a campfire!

There are some really nice ideas in here - that would also suit a kitchen - and if I could make one request, it would be to accompany Josh the next time he fancies getting away from it all in the British countryside.

Let me start by saying that we have just upgraded from a touring caravan to a static caravan.

Some of the recipes seem a little bit adventurous for camping, we have had a tent in the past with all mod cons but some of this would have been beyond us. Now that we have the benefit of a fridge freezer and a decent sized cooker and oven.

My other half loves this, he's moving on from his fry ups and BBQ's to more adventurous stuff now, risotto, linguini and next mussels with beer and coriander. we may have the only caravan on the site with a Michelin star, or Michelin tyres!! He does look like Bibendum.

I liked this little book, it does inspire you to try something more adventurous and there are some very
nice recipes. As a plain cook, I'm just as happy to try these in my kitchen and the one pot meals save
on the washing up.

Given the number of times I got ingredients out of the fridge though, I do wonder what size cool box the
author takes on his camping trips - he must be extremely organised or have access to a shop which sells
ice and will chill cool blocks for him.

Anyway, the idea is to inspire and the book certainly does that.

I am not a very imaginative cook and don't always have a huge list of ingredients at hand so this book appealed to me to try to increase my repertoire! I was delighted not only with the great ideas (I love the idea of cooking an egg inside a slice of scooped out french bread!) but the stories alongside the recipes, lovely photographs and illustrations - it's a fun book to read even if your not looking for a recipe! Now I'm desperate for a campervan!!

I think my camping cooking box will have to have a revamp! The recipes in this book are wide and varied. From really simple 'breakfasts'/snacks to hour long cooking stews. Beautifully written with short tales as to the origin of the recipe and possible options and some fantastic photography.

Josh is obviously a massive foodie - you'd have to be to have a bunch of asparagus tattooed on your arm!!

I'm going to select a couple of recipes to try and make sure I've got the ingredients with me to get me going. I'm not a hardened camper but do really enjoy it. As I get more experienced my camp cook box will hopefully get stocked more appropriately.

Worth buying as like many said in their reviews - what's to stop you trying the recipes out at home first. Great for the likes of me who live in caravans too as the recipes all require minimal utensils.

As i've been getting back into campign again, this is a handy book, not too big but professionally produced with clear instructions, ingredients etc

As you might expect it's not going to suit someone who just chucks a tent onto the back of their bike or is hiking, due to the equipment needed, but it will suit those camping with the car or in a camper van. there's also a dependency in some cases on having access to fresh seafood etc

but i've no doubt it will help inspire our compsite cooking, and tbh there's also no reason not to try one or two of these recipes at home also, as it's got some nice summery recipes

Firstly, I think that if you have a reasonable skill level in the kitchen, a few favourite
recipe books and some decent camping cooking equipment, then you really don't
need this book. That said it's quite an enjoyable and informative read.

I think one's attitude to this book will depend on how you've cooked when camping
in the past. If you tend to shoot off at the last minute with a trangia I doubt you'll
find many of these recipes suitable. If you have a bit more kit and plan your camping,
then I think there's something here for most tastes.

The book lists the kit that's required (a two ring cooker), and kit that's ideal (two rings
and a grill), add to that a thirty litre cool box, a barbecue, saucepans, stockpot and a
wok; add to that a grater and a pestle and mortar and one starts to get the idea about
the author's cooking style.

So, as a bit of a camping Philistine, I was hoping for a camping recipe book that adds a
little extra to the oft-seen British camping cuisine. This book turns that on its head, and
I imagine that that's the author's intention. As I said at the beginning, most campers
know what can be achieved if one has lots of kit and are prepared to pack the car out
(and have space for it) and I'd suggest many all ready have made that decision, especially
if they are regular campers.

So; not quite what I was looking for, but it does have detailed, but easy to follow recipes
that do look quite delicious.
