Product Description

Review

… this monograph exhibits the evolution and direction of Klimt's career, as well as his influences and inspirations - Daily Telegraph.

--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Inside Flap

In June 2006, the Neue Galerie in New York purchased Gustav Klimt's 1907 Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer 1 for $135 million. This deposed Picasso's Boy With a Pipe as the highest reported price ever paid for a piece of art sold at a public auction. However, far from being acknowledged as the representative artist of his age, Gustav Klimt was a highly controversial figure in his time. His paintings provoked violent reactions and were often branded 'obscene' and 'morbid' by the conservative majority in Vienna. Today, Klimt's works stand out as some of the most significant paintings of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The luxuriance of form, the vivid juxtaposition of colours and the rich symbolism and eroticism of his work have made Klimt one of the most popular artists in the world. Klimt was inspired by the beauty and sensuality of women as evidenced both in his stunning portraits of Adele Bloch-Bauer and Emilie Flöge, and in his enigmatic depictions of mythological femmes fatales in works such as Judith and Danae. Although best known for his paintings of women, Klimt is also recognized as a painter of startling and original landscapes. Achieving a completely independent style, a delicate sense of colour and evoking the sensuality so characteristic of his work, he created a remarkable series of landscapes, including After the Rain, Farm Garden with Sunflowers and Church at Unterach on the Attersee. Over 100 giant-size reproductions of Klimt's most celebrated work are accompanied by Rachel Barnes' expert commentary on all aspects of the artist's life, influences and works - from the inspiration of each painting, to the technique used to create it.

This book is ideal if you want to be as close to Klimt's work as possible without paying for giant life size giclee prints. The pictures are very large and detailed, with close ups on key areas, it features all the mjor paintings and many of his lessor known works.

There is ample information about the artist and his paintings, however the purpose of this book is to view and experience the work.

This is an enormous book so really displays the pictures well; it is beautifully put together with gold pages that really highlight the artwork. The information with each painting really helped my understanding of the artwork and it is incredible value for money. A great book.

Beautiful book, at an excellent price. Vibrant image quality with useful commentary. And yes, this is a very LARGE book.

This would make an excellent gift for a lover of art, of would sit well on a coffee table (assuming you have one big enough)

This is a beautiful object in it's own right, let alone a fabulous art book.

Far larger than I thought, it is slightly larger than A3 size. The pages have a great deal of gold detail on them and are printed clearly however having a few other books on Gustav Klimt I have noticed that the colour is not quite saturated enough in this work. What was lovely to see, was how many of his vast murals have been printed in full across two pages. Often only a small scene is reproduced and it makes it unclear what portion of the mural is being shown. In this volume (although printed smaller) you can grasp the full image, and when fragments of the whole are shown the author has indicated where the piece fits into the mural via a small diagram in the bottom corner. All his major works are shown in full page prints and being such a large page you can get a better feel of the impact his works have on the viewer. There is enough text to keep an interested reader happy too. As yet I confess I haven't read much as the pictures just keep drawing the eye away from it; before you know it you are flicking contentedly through with little care for the reading material no matter how good it is. That is the nature of Kilmt's work though, a feast for the eyes, but the book is essentially a luxurious journey into his work where the visuals naturally take precedence.

This Deluxe edition is cloth bound and comes housed in a sturdy slipcase, but that description does not do the binding justice. The huge format book is bound in crimson satin with the title gold blocked on the cover and spine. The edges are gilded also which enhances the red, and a matching satin bookmark is fixed into the spine.

I bought this book as a gift thinking it was the rather smaller 36 x 30 cm edition which I already own and which is a very big and very beautiful book.
This book, although still beautiful is even larger at 43x36 cm so suggest you check size with a measure before buying.
Unfortunately this edition is so big it probably wont fit onto any normal bookshelves and the print quality is slightly less brilliant than the previous version. I bought it for a friend who had to travel home by air and its really not transportable as part of luggage so I had to return it.
If you have the smaller edition look after it and hang on to it because it is now out of print and new price has rocketed.

As some reviewers commented, a very large, heavy tome! But beautiful quality with amazing detail on all the works shown in the book! Almost makes up for not being able to see the originals....

A wonderful book on Klimt, quite a phenomenon in itself. The large pictures are excellent, although as someone else has noted the colours are a fraction muted compared to the real paintings. By far the heaviest book I own, almost impossible to read comfortably. But certainly an impressive conversation piece! If you are a devoted fan of Klimt, or an art scholar, this is a must-have book.
