I simply adore the action and presence of most of the Telarc catalog. Telarc recordings never seem to get the accolades they deserve in my opinion but I like to take the opportunity to recommend them to any classical fan whenever I can.

I once managed several EMI and HMV record stores during the late 1980's and early 1990's and whenever a Telarc recording came into stock I became excited.

The manner in which they were originally recorded (digitally that is) is both impressive and legendary but seemingly not without controversy. There were reports/complaints about consumers blowing speakers because of the high bass definition etc etc...but over and above the controversy we have these sterling recordings that are so awesome in delivery!

This particular recording sits alongside some of my most cherished Telarc recordings for it is bold, red blooded and absolutely commanding.

It gives me goose bumps every time and that to me is the ultimate indication of a personal favourite!

I encourage you to purchase this recording based on the strength of the audio recording and performance as I am sure it will thrill you and keep you on the edge of your seat.

CAUTION: Telarc recordings do have a very defined dynamic range so be careful when listening to them at volume...particularly the ones that employ emphasis on bass drums, explosions and the like.

ENJOY!

So far the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra have recorded four versions of Holst's the Planets. The first was this recording in 1986 with Andre Previn for Telarc which was a great success. Because of it's success The RPO recorded the Planets again the following year this time with Sir Charles Groves For Sanctuary Records. Then came Vernon Handley's version made in the mid-nineties for their Super Audio CD Hybrid series and finally in 2005 Warner Classics released another RPO/Planets with Owain Arwel Hughes. They are all excellent but Previns is clearly the best of them. This was when Previn was the RPO's main conductor in the 1980's and did many excellent recordings with them. He and the RPO are well in charge here of a difficult piece of music that is a challenge to the very best orchestras. It's a real treat for any listener.

In about 1975, when I was 12 my Dad gave me a cassette-tape copy of The Planets performed by The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. I have recently wanted to replace that tape with a CD but I could not find the Bournemouth version. I was worried that a different production would not treat the piece with the same level of sensitivity that I was used to. However, I was very pleased to find that this performance by the Royal Philharmonic conducted by Andre Previn is every bit as good. I find this to be a faultless production delivered with all the strength and sensitivity that the various moods require and all the tempos seem to fit properly.
Another Previn recording not to be missed is the Grieg & Schumann Piano Concertos with Radu Lulu on Piano with the LSO recoded by Decca.
