1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Israel Iskowitz on 28 Feb. 2014
Bernstein conducts Mars as if he is trying to whip up the same sort of excitement appropriate for a virtuoso performance of the march in the "Pathetique" symphony, but it's wrong here; there is no suggestion of the menace inherent in the music. The central section of Jupiter is given an overblown heavy, reading - hubris rather than majesty, while the outburst that occurs in Saturn just sounds melodramatic rather than the expression of mounting alarm as it does in the best performances. The best things here are the slower movements - a sensuous Venus and a mysterious Neptune, but, overall, I did not warm to this reading of The Planets.
As for the "Facade" excerpts, they feature Vera Zorina as the reciter who has what sounds like a heavy German accent (although she was, apparently, brought up in Norway despite being born in Germany) which, I found, soon became tiresome, especially as she does little to vary the tone of her delivery or characterize the individual excerpts recorded here; a pity because the instrumental contributions under Eugene Ormandy are well played.
